Personal observation based on over 40 years of on-line life starting with The Well. Around 10% activity is "normal". There are lurkers for sure, but mostly folks sign up, read-n-post for a while and just fade away. Rick can probably see how many have zero posts and how many haven't posted in X-months, but it doesn't really matter.

That's an interesting observation and I'm with BV. I've run half a dozen BBSs and those numbers are about right. You have a core group of regulars. It's human nature. Go to any bar and you'll see the same thing.

I have started many more BBSs that died than have survived. If you put something together and there are only 2 or 3 people who visit, it will never last. There has to be a critical mass to keep it sustained and Scantlings has exceeded that critical mass so kudos to you guys!

One of a few cruel things I did to my daughter (the little sister I never had) when she was very small and unbearably cute was to tell her that she wasn't real and existed only in my imagination. Even at age 5 or 6, she was bright enough to sense the metaphysical difficulty of proving existence, but she argued passionately and with every resource at her little disposal. I guess, in retrospect, I was toughening her up for academics and she tells the story with more exasperated affection than outright hatred.
