Wow!

Glad I live south of the Mason Dixon line! We might see a low in the teens next week.

My wife thinks I'm nuts, but when we get to President's Day I consider the worst of winter behind us. The days are getting longer and warmer, although lot of the worst snows are in March.

#1 son is begging me to ship his skis back to Washington DC - he and his GF want to go skiing. Too freaking COLD for me.

That’s funny. When I went out west I was told not to bring my skis because they won’t do well in powder. I rented skis at Breck. They were always 500 other pairs of skis look just like mine

The bottom of my kid's Volkl Gotama skis used to be red with black lettering on 'em. Now, the goats look like they've had a terrible case of ski acne. There are at least 8 core shots in each ski and he has patched them with West Epoxy and a layer of whatever colored bottom coat was laying around. They are hysterical. He even learned how to replace an edge after he landed on a rock at Jackson Hole one year. Part of why it costs me $$$s to ship east was: "Dad, there's going to be ice and rocks. Please toss in the tools." Geeesh!!!

It's reached the point where the entire provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan are covered by an Extreme Cold Warning. Right now in Calgary it's -29, but there are wind chill values to -55. In Iqaluit (63 degrees north) it's -9. Yikes!

Annapolis will be warmer than feared - lowest temp will be 23F. But two snow 'storms' could bring a total of 8 or 9 inches.

I've skied in -10. Keeps the lift lines short, but the ride up is not fun.

My kids pulled the plug on skiing at Stowe. Not because of the temp, and it will be COLD, but because the room they normally rent for $100 is now priced at $600. Yikes!! It appears that folks are willing to pay to ski at a rate that is off-the-charts. Completely understandable, as it's one thing you can do with your family which doesn't require you to be indoors. It's painful to think of skiing all day someplace where it is low double digits F and you can't go into the warming hut (Bar) and warm up ever couple of hours. That's the reason we haven't skied Alta this year. Only outdoor eating and drinking.

That's nuts! I would have thought that the limited lift tickets would have kept demand for lodging down. FWIW, the Grey Fox Inn, where I've stayed before, is still under $200 a night. Hopefully they can go after the Vortex recedes.

We were thinking about doing a Seven Springs day (yeah, I know that 200 mile D.C. suck zone..lol) since that is where one of our crew skis for his high school ski team and they'd be up there anyway, but when his parents (our friends) said, "it is like regular up there, but your car is the lodge"....that problem was quickly solved.
