Weather Woes

I'm sure you have seen some coverage. It's worse than it looks. Just how much rain fell? Well, in a place called 'Hope', in a thirty hour period they had over 8 1/2" of rain. Add to that the warming temps, a high freezing level, and the rain melting recently fallen snow ... it's a recipe for, well, disaster. You can't drive here from Alberta--every highway is blocked by slides or washouts. Some won't be open for months. Both railways closed due to washouts as well. Washington State is also a mess, can't use that route either.

Although it was bad in western Washington, it is becoming apparent our northern neighbors have it much worse. We have greatly enjoyed skiing in eastern BC and have been through Sumas, Hope and Merritt several times. The photos of those areas are unrecognizable. Things are starting to dry out, with some luck the rain will stay away and get those folks some help and relief.

Ross, last night I spent about 30 minutes reading through the various Twitter posts from locals in BC and the news reports. It is astounding! I certainly hope that both the Canadian and the US Governments get moving to provide food and water to those folks. It's clear that no amount of "self-reliance" will keep them well. I fear that it will take months to get roads and railways open again.
