The continuing degradation of SA

Postby Ish » Wed Dec 19, 2012 2:16 pm

I don't want this to end up like the SA-bashing thread on PressureDrop, but I'm wondering WTF is going on over there. The forums aren't loading at all, and the mythical front page is just that.

Image

The loading has been getting more and more problematical, and I'm wondering if Scot hasn't paid the rent lately.
Is everyone having a problem here, or is it something to do with my ISP?

There was a post recently on the front page of a switch to a new ?platform? Perhaps there are glitches in the changeover.

Ish,

I think that is actually the "Content Upgrade" many of us where hoping for! ;)

Seriously, they're in the middle of a technology platform upgrade. Having lived through many of them myself - I can assert that they are HELL and that EVERYTHING that can possibly go wrong does go wrong. As little as I like some of Clean & Scott's mannerisms, I don't wish anyone ill winds when dealing with the Devil of Technology.

Yup, right after I posted it cleared right up. It's been an ongoing problem, sometimes there are several times a week where I just can't get the forums to load. Sometimes that's a blessing...

Ha...I get the same thing as Ish.

I know Scot's intentions were not to filter or censor anything..but with that mindset ultimately comes the undesirable outcome that is SA today. :|

The human race is just stupid...rational people have to censor the stupid ones out. This is not a self-censoring society...the stupid ones always win out unless they are kept under control. :ugeek:

I am amazed we've survived as a species. Humans seem to defy Darwinism every day.

I met all of you guys on SA/CA. Because of the way I was treated on Sailnet, I did briefly consider abandoning sailing before I really got started because I wondered if most sailors were total, snobish assholes, and didn't want to associate with that social group. Lucky for me, I found you guys and you proved that quite the opposite is the case.

Scantlings is a great little alcove to step away from the noise for a bit, but I say that we shouldn't let SA be taken over by trolls and ruined. WE make Cruising Anarchy the great place that it is, and we shouldn't let fucktards like Dale-JustBob-A-Hole ruin it. I will put that fucker and every one of his socks on Ignore as fast as I can, and I refuse to respond to his posts, even when he appears to be reasonable. His sole purpose is appearing "reasonable" from time to time, is only for the purpose of perpetuating his trolling.

BTW, "Red Lady" who has recently posted in CA is a friend of mine, and I recommended CA to her as a better resource than Sailnet.
She's prepping an O'day 25 for living aboard in Baltimore, so I'm helping her out. I've given her a couple sailing lessons and we sat down together and spliced eyes into some scrap line. I took her to Bacon Sails in Naptown to show her a resource for parts and advice. I'm trying to pay forward all the good stuff you guys have done for me.

I say we keep Scantlings, and keep it a bit exclusive, but that we also not abandon CA, so that we can keep encouraging new people the way you all encouraged me.

I thought it was an interesting choice to post in CA. Not very smart, but interesting. I wonder why he picked CA instead of SA or GA...

I'd guess that his motivations are that he likes to stir it up, and figured the CA crowd would be more likely to run with it. More page hits for Google analytics...

I don't think the word tasteful could be used to describe "Clean".

The gun topic is the last straw for me. I don't think one can delete an account, but one can delete posts and not go back. Voting with my feet, so to speak.

just

wow

I haven't been in CA for a few days. No particular reason, really. But seeing that is really freaky. Definitely belongs in GA or PA or even just SA, but not CA. I actually wondered how I would handle topics like that here. I don't expect this site to be the kind of place where folks would start lobbing political bombshells. Just doesn't seem to fit the vibe.

I have to say the gun thread was very poorly timed. Very. But I don't have a problem with it. If you don't like it then don't read it. I find the blanket demonization of gun owners to be a bit stupid. I respect JHiller for speaking up and I know Jim and he is an amazingly kind, generous and intelligent guy.

I'm not a gun owner. If I was I would not say so.

Poor taste pretty much describes and defines Clean. He's someone who relishes and enjoys conflict. Small wonder he trained a lawyer.

I have found fewer and fewer reasons to bother posting on CA or SA. Between Clean, Do Rag and Dale-JustBob-Hole et al, it's just not worth it. As I just said earlier tonight elsewhere here at Scantlings, Scot is making a good living off of the donation of free content by a large number of people. He does nothing in exchange. He doesn't even protect them, unless pressured, from the harassment of people like Dale and Do Rag; let alone the arrogance and insensitivity of someone like Clean.

It's a very unfair trade.

Bob,

There's no need to agree with me. We each make our own choices. To paraphrase you, I'm going to take some time off from CA and SA. I guess I've had enough. This last interaction with Clean was enough to motivate me to find other ways to spend my time. I accept that there are trolls and asses, but when the management is on that list, I'm gone.

Enjoy the Cognac, I'm drinking Egg Nog with a nice spiced Rum in it while we make a nice roast chicken.

Beau, Clean's senseless comments about popping off a few rounds and SA would pay for them sent me over the edge. How about sending a sympathy note to families hurting Mr.Clean Nuff said. Deleted my posts and reset my birthday on the site to match the Mayan calendar. Only one birthday wish came my way. The right honorable B. Perry wished me a good day. I told Bob that Dec 22 was the first day of all our lives as we survived the Mayan calendar. Nice invite from him and Lin to join this forum. Nice to be around civil behavior. Ed Wojtecki :D

Ed,

I can understand your position completely. That said, there are plenty of great people on SA and CA, just not the mgmt and a few other ass wipes. But, it's the holiday season, so my position is: ignore 'em.

I wouldn't have gotten to know a lot of you crazy guys but for CA, so I still have a soft spot for the place. Also, let's face it, when some folks really needed a hand others on CA provided that open hand over and over again. Again, it wasn't the mgmt, IMHO, it was despite the mgmt. But those open hands were really important to a lot of us.

Sometime, I'll go have a look and see if I think it's worth hanging out again, who knows, it might be.

In the mean time - Happy Holidays!!

Re: The continuing degradation of SA

I had a very long and bizarre dream two nights ago. I dreamed I was in Australia tracking down the Hole. I saw his face. I'd recognize it today.I found him and I tried to beat him up. But I couldn't land a clean punch. He didn't fight back. I then had a stick and I tried to whack him upside the head. But again, I couldn't land a clean blow. Then some people showed up with a wheelbarrow. In the wheelbarrow was a box and in the box was the head of the Hole. But it wasn't really his head. The people were just screwing with me. I am not making this up.

When I woke up I was disturbed. I realized that the Hole had gotten the better of me if he was appearing in my dreams. I realized that there was no way I was going to "land a blow". As I reflected it became apparent to me that I had lost that battle. I don't like losing battles. I felt defeated. Probably not a good idea for me to turn it into a contest. But that's just my failing. Sometimes the balance of failings and successes tips in the wrong direction.

Oregon Gerry is coming up today. He sent me a pm last night informing me of his arrival. I really like it that he feels he can just show up and the shack wuill welcome him. He is a real deep down quality guy.
Maybe the balance will tip back to the succes side today. No. In fact the balance will tip to the success side because Violet, Stacy and Max will also be here too.

I think what I would like is to be wearing wooly clothes, anchored in my Folkboat in the inner harbor at Ludlow with Ruby. I'd heat up some Dinty Moore stew or the stew I had pre cooked and packaged for the cruise ( I'm not keen on the Dinty Moore mystery meat). I'd put some Bobby Schumann on the little portable hi-fi. I'd read my book, CONSTANTINE'S SWORD, for the second time. I'd take a nip, pat my dog and relax to the gentle motion of my Folkboat. I'd much prefer a dream like that.

Count me in the category of just not engaging with the trolls more than a small amount. Life's too short and I have too little free time these days and just choose not to waste it with them. Hopefully, CA will survive. One of us knew each other in the real world first but I think we all congregated in CA to discuss boats from a position of mutual respect and that lead us to become a bit of a community.

If I need a fight, I'll drop into PA but even that has deteriorated into a shouting match rather than the spirited discussion it was

Over the years, we had a few trolls drop by. Some left. Some became marginal contributors but it really took dale with his relentless attacks to change the atmosphere. Maybe we sometimes got a bit full of ourselves but generally we accepted whoever showed up for a drink and as long as they basically played nice, all was well. What I really liked was the interaction of the group, from young working class to retired, very successful businessmen and everything in between with no real pretensions.

Maybe after a bit of a time out, things will calm down in CA but it won't ever be the same. Thats a shame because it means the trolls win. Scantlings is a great break but I worry who will support the next Ajax or Courtney when they show up with little knowledge but much energy.

Anyway, nice to have a comfortable pub here.
