Be careful out there - new nastygram floating around.... Cryptolocker !

This little guy is very evil. There is a level of morphing that makes it very dynamic, sneaky and hard to catch new strains. McAfee (among others) is doing what they can with the variants that are known. Due to the morphing the virus changes just enough that AV can catch some but not all.

Irie... that bug sounds nasty. One of my many responsibilties at work is managing our IT infrastructure. I'm a hack, but can keep us running through the normal "is it plugged in" or "have you tried rebooting" type emergencies. (I'm actually a bit more capable than that but that's the majority of my time spent). Anyway, I work with very smart people who are not all tech savvy, which has led to quite a few bouts of spyware, malware, viruses and the like and stuff like this bug give me nightmares. Especially if they pick something up that can get back to the servers.

My wife works at a local community college and they are quite worried about the Cryptolocker virus. Our IT guy at work sent a warning as well. It seems to be a bad one.

It amazes me that people fall for this stuff. Reading the description of the virus, the user actually needs to install it for it to do its thing. Who on earth would install such a thing?

When I cleaned out my mother's computer that was used only for email...I found hundreds of viruses.

I'm an engineer. I work with engineers. I had a very senior engineer who would need his machine rebuilt about once a month because he'd find a way. That's also who does stuff like that. Unfortunately he's not the only one, but he was the worst of my flock.

I had an argument with him one day when he got an email from a client that our firewall would not let him go the the website that was linked within. He demanded that I unblock the website so he could access it. After reading the email, I calmly asked him to call the client and ask if the email he got was the one he was expecting. Nothing in the subject, or text of the email had anything to do with what he was expecting. He refused and continued to demand. I called the client from his phone with it on speakerphone. I told them we were expecting an email with project specifics from them and had gotten a suspicious email from them instead. They apologized that they had not sent the email we were expecting, but that we shouldn't click on the email we did get and they would look in to it on their end.

Never got an apology, but thankfully he doesn't work with me anymore.

My mother. Email. Weather and online games. 2 weeks ago, I found 8 toolbars,3 Trojans and 437 malware traces.

Now you can actually get online.

I guess it's a weird case of reverse naiivete. No mom. Dad doesn't have a computer. We have 5 comps in the house and I guess my IT dictatorship serves us well. No viruses, malware, bots, etc. And no Mcafee, Symantic, etc. bloatware. Never needed it.
