I owe one of you an apology and I don't know who!

Postby BeauV » Mon Feb 22, 2016 10:31 pm

A while ago I bitched and moaned about the Oxford Comma, and Strunk & White getting it wrong.

Well, I was wrong. I am looking at page 2, top of the page, and it clearly says that one is to use the Oxford Comma (as I just did) to avoid the obvious pitfalls of being an ass.

To whomever I disagreed with, I've no looked it up and you were right! Sorry, it was a few days ago and I just got my S&W out.

LOL!! Not pulling a gun... I just hate screwing up. So, when someone I respect points out I'm wrong, I look it up. Now, if I could only remember who point out I was wrong - it happens so rarely :) ;)

I was referring to the "get my S&W out", which is usually followed by sharp noises. Never mind, carry on.

Put your signed copy of S&W away with the rest of your first editions, and get a better reference.

I think most people know that E.B. White also wrote Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, but he was also a passionate sailor, and his grandson, Steve, owns Brooklin Boat Yard building amazing wooden boats, and is one of the nicest guys in the business.

I have my brother pick up spare copies of Strunk and White at garage sales, usually about a dime. When I receive a particularly poorly written business correspondence I often include a copy with my reply. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

Any of you need a lift to Charlotte's barn, I'm your man. And then we can drop by Condon's garage and get some ice cream.

Don't forget E.B.'s son, and Steve's Dad, Joel White the yacht designers. I really like Joel White's work. Great book about Joel and Steve and the boatyard called "A Unit of Water, a Unit of Time" here: http://www.amazon.com/Unit-Water-Time/d ... 139&sr=1-3

Yeah, the boat he designed for us is in that book. Lovely guy, we really enjoyed him, but I am glad I built Bob's design instead.

Joel did a number of nice vessels. I had one of his Sakonet 23's for a couple years, very nice boat. The Center Harbor 31 is a lovely vessel!

I read A Unit of Water, A Unit of Time again late last year.
That book covers three generations of the White family and makes a simple sailor feel like one of the crew.
Or maybe like that strange uncle almost all families have?
But a welcome one.

Commas, huh?

The other manual I find very helpful is, Woe is I, though you probably wouldn't know it from my online dribblings.
