DC Speed cameras

Postby LarryHoward » Tue Aug 22, 2017 8:44 am

I guess my medical insurance is good when my biggest expense seems to be DC speed cameras. Widely recognized as set up to trap and bilk commuters from MD or VA. I came home last night to a $100 fine for 46 in a 35, where there is a 45 mph sign in the frame and it's the first sign you see as you enter that road from an intersection. Apparently, you enter into a 35 mph zone (marked before the merge) about 400 yards before an intersection and the 45 mph zone starts 200 yards after the intersection so you have an "unmarked" 600 yard section of 35 mph with a speed camera right before the 45 mph sign. 11 over (or 1 over the first sign you see) gets you a $100 ticket.

At least I know where the MD cameras are near OM's place and the fines are cheaper if you get caught. DC's are revenue producers (some $150M annually) with many located right at limit changes down that go back up within a few blocks. Classic (now automated) speed traps.

It's not just Congress out to screw you in DC.

Bahstids!

I'm surprised that didn't show up on your threat receiver :D If you are driving in freedom loving VA that bans such devices, WAZE works very well at warning.

These are the taxes that dare not speak their names. Highly regressive, and easy to justify because someone, "broke", a law, and often as not, put the poor on a treadmill of I can't pay my fine so I get a bigger fine or jail time so I lose my job or lose my license so I lose my job , ( because public transport works so well), and can't pay my fine. This was one of they key flash-points behind the Ferguson troubles.

Waze is essential in DC. Also, look for cars slowing for no apparent reason - especially cabs.

I used the MARC and/or Metro whenever possible. I gave up driving in the district years ago.
I haven't had to commute into DC for awhile now, and I cannot imagine how painful the Metro safety overhaul has been for the regular riders.

Jeezus H., I was in and out of Bethesda all day Sunday and completely forgot about those cameras. Pretty sure we didn't cross the DC line, but is Wisc. Ave on the "bad place to speed" list? I do sort of drive like a maniac, or so The Admiral says.

My daughter likes it though....

At one point DC was writing parking tickets if you did not have your front wheels pointed in toward the curb.
