HMMWV Fun

If it ain't about boats, it should go here.

I'm sure anchoring is prohibited. We wouldn't want boats cluttering up the view of the waterfront landowners.

First hurdle done: Got the HMMWV titled and a 30-day temp tag. I wasn't sure what the reaction to the unusual VIN would be.
Now, onto the safety inspection.

Anchoring off our waterfront home is strongly encouraged. It enhances our view.

We love the rotation of vessels that visit Blakely Harbor.

We carefully inspect them because we often learn new useful tips from them. (Big binoculars aid such inspections.)

Wow, nice set of Big Eyes! You know, those would be a lot more useful in lower latitudes where there's some heat and sunshine. ;)

Well those lenses sure beat my monocular spotting scope! (I like to check out all the traffic at slack tide either queuing up for Deception Pass or after they transit.)

I'm with Kim, but only have a basic set of binoculars handy in the sun room.

Congrats on getting the titling and temp registration. Looking forward to seeing the Power Ranger out on the road.

I had a meaningful discussion with her about it yesterday.

I told her, no texting unless parked. No eating or drinking unless parked or at least at a red light.
I reminded her that it doesn't have anti-lock brakes and the only thing between her and a T-bone collision is a fabric door. The body is aluminum and the front is made of fiberglass.

Enjoy it, but drive it with greater situational awareness and be careful.

Rich,

one of my a--hole neighbors bitched that my step daughter's CX5 is always in the overflow parking. Can I borrow the 5 ton to give them something to really bitch about?

If you can get me past your gate guard, I'd be happy to come over for a couple hours for a casual, languorous lunch and a beer, blocking 3-5 parking spaces in the process.

I don't get it. It's called "overflow" for a reason. She's not parking in someone else's reserved spot. Fucking brownshirts.

Surprisingly it's not, there is always a good number cruisers at any given time, but who knows for how long. Landowners have blocked parking and some access to what I am told is one of the better surf breaks on the East Coast.

Police sit at the base of each bridge delivering a clear message about who might belong on the island.

The HMMWV flunked the safety inspection due to a sloppy U-joint on the front drive shaft that I missed. Otherwise, all good.
I ordered the part and dropped it off with the mechanic yesterday and asked him to install it. Once that's done, I should be listed as "passing" and I can obtain my regular, 2-year tags.

Great to hear. I sure wish CA had a "safety inspection" annually. We got used to that when we were living in New Zealand and I think it's a great idea. There are beat up and unsafe cars roaming all around California which would never be allowed on the road in New Zealand. They are involved in well over 6 times the number of accidents as vehicles which are in good shape. Sure, there's some selection bias in those numbers. But I'm tired of seeing cars without wheels, dropped drive shafts, torn off fenders, etc... along the side of the road where they finally crashed.

I guess I'm becoming one of those grumpy old men....

Hold on, Beau. No one said anything about "annual."

Maryland safety inspections are ONCE, each time a vehicle is sold. That's it. It's useless and nothing more than a cash-grab.
There are 2 kinds of vehiclular traffic in this state- The well-to-do and the econo-shitboxes of the working poor. We have the same shady cars with no brake lights, bald tires and chattering wiper blades as you do.

Even more fun, as stated earlier in this thread, the working poor use the Historic tag as a loophole around the safety inspection by registering their '91 Civic as "Historic" and driving it to work everyday (which is against the rules).

Funny story- Florida completely eliminated safety inspections, putting the onus on the state police to enforce safety violations by issuing "repair orders."

Rhode Island had annual inspections. It was a license to steal for unscrupulous gas stations.

Virginia has annual safety inspections and emissions inspections every two years. I don't mind the safety inspections as we have a much higher likely hood of having other cars on the road with working tail lights.

Ajax, copy that on the no annual inspection. My optimistic jump. New Zealand has an annual and the cops will write you up, or even tick a parked car, if there is an obvious violation. Of course out in the whap whaps there are plenty of UTEs that are a long way away from passing.

Ha! The unsafe cars are around because cops spend most of their time repo'ing glass tint, exhausts...etc... of cars owned by "economic undesirables".

I had to convince a cop my exhaust is stock and my car is quieter than the Corvettes, Mustangs, and 90% of the German and Italian hardware around here. But it is a car owned by the wrong caste.

Here in Washington we had bi-annual emissions inspections. After a certain number o years the cars would age out of the system and no longer require inspections. Finally last year they dropped the inspections altogether because almost all the cars were efficient enough to pass the inspections successfully no matter their age.

Here in Maryland the emission inspections are every two years. As long as the check engine light isn't on (and not burned out!) the car will pass.

I did a bunch of house cleaning and laundry yesterday morning so that I could work on the HMMWV in the afternoon with a clear conscience.

Gave it an oil change with a better grade of oil than what the Pentagon directs. The old stuff came out like molasses.
I noticed an immediate reduction in noise and a much faster build up in oil pressure at cold start-up. I added a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil to start breaking down sludge. I prefer Seafoam but I'm out and I'm not going to town to buy it.

The truck is a 2-man soft top. It was missing the rear curtain for the cab when we bought it. I finally scored a better top and a rear curtain. Now it'll stop raining inside the truck.
Lastly, the cab has no storage of any kind. I built a "glovebox" with cup holders out of an old 5.56mm ammo can. I'll plumb it for 12v and a USB charger in the near future.

Depending on the rain and what work has in store for me, I'll drain and inspect the remaining three geared hubs, spindle nuts and perform the coolant flush and thermostat replacement.
