Chris, No need to apologize. As far as I am concerned, you and your family will always be welcome here.

The celebration for your dad was a beautiful and well done event, with lots of friends and family and heartfelt speeches to remember him. Somehow during the day, I missed talking with you and for that I apologize.

Chris,
Glad we could be a part of it. It was a busy day, sorry we didn't get to chat longer. I am pleased that your father's enthusiasm for so many things has rubbed off on you. I still think of the discussion I had with Larry when you alerted him you'd seen someone running around the county with a trailer attached to their Civic Si. "That had to have been Shawn..", or words to that effect. I still think about that every time I plug the trailer in.
He is still here, just not physically. We'll all remember him for a long time.

That photo with the trailer full of wood pellets is a special kind of sacrilege, Shawn.

I was slightly over weight there..It is a one-ton axle and the trailer itself is about 375#. I stay on the backroads and make sure the tires are up to full PSI on the sidewall. As long as they get the load on top of the axle it tows just fine.

It's turning your Civic Si into a "mule" that I was referring to.

Ajax, that was a great speech. I'm in awe of you. If I had tried to say those words, not that I could ever have come up with them, I would have been blubbering like a baby into the microphone.

I really hope I can intercept you this summer and get you some wheel time on Restive.

Upon reading Larry's letter further, he suggested that Beau V. disseminate some of his cremains in San Francisco and Monterey Bay.

Beau, are you willing?

Right now, I'm getting all of the names lined up with locations. I'm working with Larry's family to determine who/how the cremains will be shipped. Whoever participates is requested to video record the ceremony and we'll post all of the clips in a Dropbox or Google Drive as an archive. No Youtube or Vimeo postings, please.

Rob,

If you give me a few minutes in front of a keyboard, I can usually articulate an idea fairly well. My problem is that I am unable to think on my feet. I'm the guy in high school who always thought up his witty retort two days after being made fun of by his classmates.

Ajax,

I'd be honored. We'll be happy to comply with whatever instructions the family provides.

You'd better have a box of Kleenex. We have ash spreading tasks for you and Kim Bottles as well.

I am in possession of a letter from Larry and have been tasked with disseminating some of his cremains to various locations around the globe that were important to him.
I have already PM'd Olaf. I'll be sending a PM to you and Kim this week with details.

I will standby for instructions. I am honored to be involved.

Yesterday, I scattered my portion of Larry's ashes into Block/Long Island Sound, per one of his requests.

I sailed/motored from Shinnecock, NY to Block Island to wait out TS Elsa, then to the burial point shrouded in thick fog nearly the entire way. Not the conditions I wanted for the occasion. Finally, the sun cracked through and pushed the fog back just long enough to make it not such a somber occasion. The sky and the sea were of iron, which reminded me of Larry's iron will and also his iron gut to be able to do all of that ocean racing. And so, I said a few words and scattered the ashes. Now I really am alone onboard. I recorded the coordinates from the plotter for Larry's wife.

I have passed your addresses onto Larry's wife some time ago. She said that she would mail out the packages. I'm not sure what her timeline is on that so if you haven't received anything, don't fret about it. I guess just let me know so that I can communicate with her about it, and assuage any concerns that she may have.

Well done Rich.

I received a portion of Captain Howard’s remains yesterday. I haven’t pickled a date yet, but any of you wishing to join Stacey and me are quite welcome.

We may wait until we’re just outside the Golden Gate Bridge. Larry would have sailed those waters in the Navy.

I too, received a portion of Larry's remains yesterday. Not sure if I will wait until Panope is launched (August) for a proper "under sail" event or, perhaps the right "moment" might happen during one of the numerous anchor tests - from the skiff.

I'll message Lynne but if any of you have a suggestion, do chime in.

I sat in a room with an old friend this morning and watched him die. Three weeks ago the docs at MD Anderson thought he'd make it. 9 days ago the cancer reappeared and literally ate him alive in that much time, disintegrating his bones. I sat and prayed that he was in the arms of a kind and loving God.

Randy was the winning pitcher in the state championship game in 1973, in the highest classification at the time, 4A. Drafted twice by MLB. Been my pipe supplier and friend for over 30 years. A fine human being. He came to our backyard when our son was little to show him the right way to throw and hit a baseball.

Losing Larry the way we did is soul crushing. Losing Randy the way we did is soul crushing. I need faith right now.

Rob,

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend Randy. This has been a tough year. Good job being there when your friend needed you. It's the best we can all do. I'm sure he's with the angels steeling home plate.

Rob,

So sorry to hear about your friend. He’s at peace, and was absolutely comforted by you being there with him. You’re a great mixture of confident capability, a big heart, and a great sense of humor - all of which I’m sure conveyed to your friend that “everything is going to be alright”.

A blessing on your friend, and you, at this difficult time.

It's brutal. It takes an iron spine to sit with someone and ease them into the afterlife. Even more so when it's friends in rapid succession. You're a good man.
