Can't see hating them outdoors, can't see loving them indoors.

In fact, they should be illegal indoors.

They are of course an outdoor instrument, pretty much reign supreme outdoors.

(Although they do sound rather good in our local music hall. But they are played by the masters in there.)

Why are bagpipers always marching?

They're trying to get away from that awful sound.

How does a musician define perfect pitch?

The ability to throw a bagpipe into a toilet and not hit the rim.

I don't know...cannons reign supreme outdoors, but the choices of music are limited.

Evolution?

I actually like bagpipes, but I really like bagpipe jokes.

Funny, the version of "perfect pitch" I was familiar with involved throwing the banjo in the dumpster and hitting the accordion. I can't think of an instrument I'd categorically reject other than Lucinda William's voice, go figure. Thanks for Maine link, Bob. Never heard of the fellow, never considered the money. He could furl his sails better, though:-)

I read that my high school as put Jay Geils on its Wall of Honor. Jay joined my elementary school class in 7th or 8th grade as I recall. He lived about 1/4 mile from me as the crow flies, but we were never particular friends. He played the trumpet in the H.S. band, and I never had a clue that he was more than an average H.S. musician. I don't recall him playing guitar at that time, but I easily could have missed or have just forgotten. If he was out of the ordinary in any sort of way it was as an organizer and promoter. Those talents have apparently served him well.

I never followed his band (or any other band) at all.

Apparently he actually dated Meryl Streep who was a few classes behind us. Or maybe that's a just a rumor. I think they are the only two graduates of B.H.S. whose names have wide spread recognition.

He attended a class reunion last fall. Talking with another member of the band, he said he had been playing the trumpet again after a long layoff, and realized that he had only played trumpets of student quality in the past, and had never played a true professional-quality trumpet until recently.

That's quite a school. The only famous/big success person from my school was Mike Reno of Loverboy and from my wife's school it was Bryan Adams.

I met J Geils a month or so ago- he has a weekly lunch with the fellow who built/cares for my Caterham, and I joined the group. I understand he does not feel the world has treated him well, and got the impression he does not treat the world very well either, sort of an adversarial relationship without the divorce.

Jim Koch of Boston Beer fame was a classmate of mine in high school. Smart guy who has been very successful. I hope he has avoided the peril of his product.

Brad Delp (RIP) of Boston went to my high school.... my sister thought he was going to ask her to the prom.... too bad for him

Saw Brad play with his Beatles-cover band at a small, local yacht club in Mass a few years before he passed away. As Buffett sang in his early days... "it's a short haul to a long fall". Tragic stuff that he felt so alone.

And now back to the music..... "amplified soul-blues with unbelievable guitar chops".... sounds about right 8-)

My long deceased friend has a beautiful daughter that married one of the Barr Brothers. I have been watching this band and love how they have grown. American lads who came up to the Montreal music scene. Think Arcade Fire. Montreal has some great talent. Enjoy. :like:

I'm fascinated by Sayaka Shoji. There are a bunch of her virtuoso performances on You Tube. This is one of my faves:

Technical precision, yet emotive & passionate. Plus she's lovely.

It's breathtaking to listen to the tone, and then watch her left elbow. It never moves out of alignment, a foundation that allows everything else to work. Amazing! Thanks, made my morning.

My wife has been the Principal Harpist of the VSO for 35 years--that's a career in anything, let alone a symphony gig. She's retiring in January!

Your last chance to hear her in a piece that features a lot of harp is this weekend, when she performs the Bruch Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Harp. :D

After that, lots of teaching, a chance to do more composing, and time to put together a book of orchestral excerpts with her world famous (really!) fingerings. And step off the crazy merry-go-round that is a new program every couple of days. And spend more time on the boat!!

Well the Bruch Scottish Fantasy for Harp, Violin, and Orchestra came and went. The soloist got excited/nervous, took off with the tempo and went like a bat out of hell. Elizabeth described it as "A small person taking a big dog for a walk ... and then the dog sees a squirrel!" lol

Congratulations on finishing up a wonderful career! I'm constantly amazed, but no longer surprised by the achievements of people on this site.

Out of curiosity, is there such a thing as a travel harp you can bring on the boat? Imagine that kind of music over a quiet anchorage.

Believe it or not, yes. It's called a 'Harpsicle'. Limited range, not much sound, but enough to keep fingers in shape and play Celtic tunes. And if it gets bashed by a winch handle, no big deal as they are not that expensive!
