Larry Howard has problems

If it ain't about boats, it should go here.

There are few things as rewarding as camaraderie and friendship with a fellow sailor.
And few things as heart wrenching as losing them.

I did not know Larry personally. He's been here since the beginning in 2012. In that time he contributed over 5,000 posts. It's safe to say that his input has touched us all. That is the definition of community. Coming together to share common passions. We are all richer thanks to that community.

Fair Winds, fellow mariner.

I have a friend who is boat shopping and I pointed him at the Catalina but he seems hung up on a different boat so it didn't work out.
I was really hoping to keep the boat within our general social circle.

I am a few days late, but Larry's birthday was August 19. I sent my love to the family in the FB.

Every time I see a Catalina 42, it reminds me of him. I know he did LOTS of other cool things in his day, but the boat is where we connected. I thought briefly about buying his boat, but I and lots of local friends helped Lynne sell it instead. Just was not in the cards.

Happy birthday (a couple days late!!), Larry!

Happy belated, Larry. Miss you.

I waited until Panope was launched to give Larry a proper send-off - under sail.

This video is uploaded as "private". Only those with the link (or this embed) can view.

I do not know Lynne well enough to know if she would like to see this video. Assuming you believe she would, could one of you (who know Lynne) pass this along to her?

Almost every morning I check into a 75 meter ham radio SSB boaters net.
I have been keeping Larry’s ashes in the radio room so I see them and think of Larry every morning.
This morning it just struck me out of the blue that it was time. I had recovered enough from my hip replacements to go out into Puget Sound alone and spend some time reflecting on what a great friend he was before spreading his remains. (As you know we had a number of long phone conversation together. We were chemo buddies.)
As I left Blakely Harbor I don’t mind telling you I got very emotional. Tears were shed.
I wanted to find the right place. I wasn’t sure where it might be.
Then it struck me, the turning mark where the USS Nimitz makes her turn to starboard into Rick Passage on her way to Bremerton Naval Shipyard.
I stopped under a somber sky at the mark and spend some time alone reflecting on him and the great friend he was.
Then after I watched his remains drift away, the sun came out. I have to think that Larry might have arranged that.
Goodbye Captain Howard I will never forget your friendship.

Steve & Kim -- I'm certain that Larry is smiling someplace, even if it's only in a lot of people's hearts. He was clearly one of the "good guys."

That's really a cool way to do it, Kim!

You as well Steve..I was unable to watch the video, but I am 100% sure it was a fitting send-off.

I have lost lots of folks in my life, as I am sure we all have, but as a neighbor, mentor and a person who became a close friend, Larry has been a little different to me than others. Knocking out the punch list was just one way I thought was fitting to make sure Larry knew we had his back, helped him clean up a few loose ends he was unable to do himself, honor him (and help Lynne). I do run into her on occasion, and she has a good support network here. I can't even imagine how much she misses him.

He was a "good guy", Beau, and remembering him during appropriate occasions, seems to be the most fitting way to honor his legacy. Which reminds me I need to check the boat yard next time I go by and see if the new owner took official possession of the boat..She was still here last I checked, but that was earlier this summer. I can see the mast from the service road just north of the Post Office. That will be my closure.
