Ooops, it's back.

glad you like it. I'm just waiting for someone to whine about it looking like that fake teak stuff made from recycled baby diapers.

Geeze Rick, the planking along the bulwark looks just like that fake teak stuff made from recycled baby diapers. :D

I like the font you've found for the masthead (or whatever you call that).

Rick,

Maybe Raster can build you an "image" for the bulwark that looks less like re-constituted baby diapers.... where is Raster anyway??

I think you mean Rasper. I could render something like that up too, but you've given me an idea. I just happen to know if a boat with bulwarks like that made from gen-u-one teak. ;)

I have a picture of shiny fiberglass, it's way easier to take care of.

Yup, I meant Rasper....

Cool, I can think of a few teak and mahogany bits too.

This is turning into a very interesting site.

Try F5. I still have it, although it cycles between bubinga and beech.

Reading this from my tablet so that's probably why I can't see it.

Joe, it's showing planking on my iSlab at the moment. Weird the way it comes and goes. Cold be caches not being updated, could be magic. Beau

my guess is it's image caching.

the 'planks' are just a very thin strip about 3 pixels wide that are repeated across the header. When you don't see it, do you just see a blue background?

OK I see it now. Where'd you get such long lengths of fine tight grain lumber Rick?

Rick, I like the style you are using for phpBB. Did you download one of the available styles (and tweak it)? If so, which one?

Seems to come and go for me, too.

The tight grain looks like some old-growth 2x4's I was demo'ing out of house I was working on yesterday. Beautiful boards -- long, tight, straight grain, totally knot-free. Beautiful wood to be buried behind the lathe and plaster walls.

You might want to tighten up the seams and add some bungs.

This is a downloaded style called se_sprites. As you no doubt have seen, there are hundreds (thousands?) of styles available. My favorites are the ones with the most contrast and least amount of 'noise'. I edit the stylesheets or templates either through Dreamweaver or directly through the phpbb ACP. A lot of the stuff is handled in the database as well. I really love phpBB since it is so well supported and has proven extremely robust over the 10+ years I've been using it.

My rehab site is also phpbb based

http://sail2live.com/baba/phpbb/

I considered using that same style for Scantlings, but I wanted Scantlings to look a little more sophisticated to match the highly sophisticated clientelle. *cough*

ha...yeah, there's a lot of that in our house built in 1922. Beautiful oak floor you have there in the kitchen. All it needs is some tar and asbestos tile on top of it.

In San Francisco there are guys who rebuild the old homes from the early 1900s. They are forever pulling out 2X6 rafters and 2X10 joist of Douglas Fir that are over 100 years old, tight grain and completely clear of knots. When I owned a wood boat, I built a network of these folks to collect wood. I use that fir to replace six planks on my old IOD, re-deck a friend's boat and we built a supply of "spare" planks, frames and floors for the fleet to use. They're still working their way through the supply. Any time you can find a supply of that beautiful old wood it's sure worth grabbing it. My understanding is that what folks have always called "Oregon Pine" back in-the-day is what we call Douglas Fir.

Our 1954 house is built using old-growth fir. You have to drill a pilot hole for a nail, they just bend over if you try and hammer them in. Wonderful wood.

Ish,

My old IOD was built in 1947, has been raced VERY hard ever since, and her Douglas Fir planks and frames are still rock hard (mostly). The ones that needed to be replaced were all damaged by rain water and hosing down the boat. Wood needs salt. It breaks my heart to see folks hosing off old wooden boats with fresh water.

We could have used them for the Keelson on the Francis Lee and I would have been saved the drive out to Forks and back. Oh well.

Hi Beau,

I'm sort of lurking here in the shadows. Waiting to see if everyone here goes rabid like what went down on CA before I reveal myself... Rick has done a great job with this forum, took me a while to get used to some things like 'last post' and I'll be stepping up more frequently.
