I almost never watch TV, but my family have abandoned me for 10 days and now might be a good time to waste a few evenings on entertainment. Any suggestions for what's good and can be jumped into the middle of?

You have to ask? It's "shark week" and J is critiquing the science in real time. Having the lab she is headed for on Friday featured last night for bull and hammerhead certainly made her mom comfortable.

Speaking of Formula One ... If you have not seen 'Senna', or 'Rush'--do so! The time will fly by while you watch. They may be available from your cable provider.

If you see Rush, go and look for a BBC Documentary (I found it on YouTube) titled "When Playboys Ruled the World". Fantastic!

All true, both movies are very good and much more than just racing flicks.

Niki Lauda has to be one of the toughest dudes to ever live. Hunt the shunt would have never won the world championship if Lauda had not crashed in Nurburgring, however Hunt's drive in Japan was pure passion and guts and for that he deserves his title (almost.)

Now I have to search for that BBC vid........

Agree with you on Lauda. As for F-1, need to find a replay online. August break and all. Formula1.com has race edits if you are set up to port it to the TV. Bahrain and Hungary particularly good to watch as is the second half of Montreal. I'll have to find the BBC doco.

Caught myself at work yesterday watching some Robin Williams improv online. Had to force myself to quit. An amazing comedian and sly commentator on the times. Bit sad he succumbed to his demons.

Susan went to Redwood High School a couple years ahead of Robin, so even though she did not know him she has always followed his comedy. He was truly a genius of improv and comedy in general. His taking of his own life is very sad.

He showed up to one of the stages of the Tour of California several years ago wearing a hoody pulled over his face so he could hide his identity. He sat next to my brother and me, we left him alone because we could tell he did not want to be recognized. He looked sad then too.

I was surprised that someone so blessed with such high energy and spirit would seem so withdrawn in person. We nodded to each other and that was about the extent of our interaction. Now I understand better what was going on there. Depression is a demon, several members of my extended family have had problems with it.

Thanks. I'm sure it's great and all, but I lack even a major fraction of the sitzfleisch required to watch auto racing.

You can usually find reruns of Deadliest Catch on. Good for "Oh crap, look at that wave, how can they keep working in those conditions" type of stuff.

+1 on F1 for me.

I guess that rules out World Football (Soccer) too.....(I have found recording all of these events and then skipping through to the important parts saves lots of time and sitting on one's sitzfleisch.)

Wife and I actually watched most of that on Netflix DVD on cold winter nights by the wood stove and in late-season anchorages. It was pretty amazing.

Kim, I am pretty hopeless. I'll watch sports as a social activity, but I'm usually the one getting drinks for people, etc.

OM, I understand completely. I read the paper while watching mysteries, like Sherlock and Elementry, because it just moves too slowly. You can try the Bourne movies, they usually have enough violence and complexity to keep me interested for a while without reading or doing email at the same time. It took the Admiral a while to get used to this duplexing. She still doesn't really like it. BV

I don't like violence. :( I should probably just learn to knit.

Try chess, the computers are really good at it now. I can't win any more, but in know how to dial them down to stupider.

Good Will Hunting. Or for plain entertainment, The Simpsons never fails to get a laugh.

Big Bang Theory is some nice low cal, low commitment TV. I tend to watch it on the plane.

I haven't played in a while, but the program I had allowed me to switch sides. When the computer had me almost licked I'd switch sides, and it was fascinating and useful to watch it battle back while I tried to finish myself off.

Lots of good stuff on A&E, History and PBS.

Check out the British detective shows on PBS like Morse, Lewis, Frost and others. They are usually much more intelligent than ours. You'll get a strong impression that Oxford is as dangerous as Detroit though - several murders a week, usually involving the University. :D

Doc Martin for laughs and graduate studies in being unconsciously rude.

Breaking Bad is right up there with The Wire as one of my favorite TV experiences.

I've enjoyed the new BBC Sherlock Holmes, Vikings has been fun, haven't started True Detectives, or House of Cards. SOA is terrible.

The old movie? If so, it was filmed in Bristol, England when I lived there - it was the first time I'd ever seen a place and activities I knew on film and it wasn't edited like now, where the geography is all chopped up during editing.

It played here back then - I saw it in a theater in Chelan Wa. about '64 and I've seen it on the tube once or twice. Be a real slice of history now - British youth pre Mod's & Rockers.

If that's not it, I dunno.

Start with the pilot.

"Crazy Handful of Nothing" was my favourite episode - when Walt blows up Tuco's office with the "Meth" that's actually fulminated mercury - priceless
