I wasn't taken in by the garden variety pitch, which came on paper to my office, but I did think the sender was impersonating Bruno Schulz, who works here:

http://www.schulzandschulz.com/index.html In particular, check out the "Our Team" page.

So I emailed Bruno at his work address to tell him someone was trying to scam me using his name and, lo and behold he wrote back thusly:

This is to acknowledge the receipt of your message in my office,Yes i work in this law firm and the letter is authentic.
I purposely refer our correspondence to my private gmail account for security reason/confidentiality of the transaction.
Please refer our future correspondences to my private email: brunoschulzlaw@gmail.com<mailto:brunoschulz48@gmail.com> so as to give you further information of proceedings

Thank you,

Bruno Schulz, Esq

So I checked with a real German lawyer I know and, of course, Bruno and his firm don't exist and someone is having a chuckle at my expense in Berlin tonight.

I must be getting old, but at least I didn't go for the 41 mil.

Well, it was only 40% and then my lawyer at the fancy Berlin firm would take his cut, so we're down to about 10 and then there's taxes. When I need a few mil, I usually just buy a lottery ticket or sell a kidney.

Oh, I thought you gave up 41 Mil, if it was just a couple Mil then you did the right thing.

Carry on.......

I got a couple of those at work years ago - pretty pathetic but fun. The scariest thing I ever read about them was a news story about a senior person in the federal department of revenue here (Our IRS) who got taken in by one - to the tune of 6 figures.

Luckily it was his own money but he actually kept his job after the story came out - can you imagine someone that clueless holding a high ranking finance job?
