Scantlings

Yesterday, on the Diane Rehm Show, I heard an interview with Richard Flanagan, from Tasmania, the author of The Narrow Road to the Deep North, a novel about an Australian, held as a POW by Japan, based somewhat on the experiences of his father. I have never heard an interview with an author that was so moving and absorbing. I have it on hold at our library. I can't wait to read it.

We are proud of him, he has a long list of excellent books and lives on Bruny Island, across the channel from us.

Sounds like a great book I'll look for it. I'm an old Nevil Shute fan, which is probably the most sense I have ever had of that region of the world. "Trustee From the Toolroom", is one of my favorite books- it has sailing, the PNW and good deeds, what is not to like.

Not sure of how you made the leap to Nevil Shute, it sounds like A Town Called Alice.

I'm about 1/2 through The Narrow Road to the Deep North. It is beautifully written, disturbing, difficult to put down and I know I will be sorry when it ends.

Just finished The Narrow Road to the Deep North. It is one of the best books I have read.
