Today and tomorrow

Postby bob perry » Sun Jan 20, 2013 11:40 pm

Today:
Today was kind of magical. I had Violet up here from noon till after dinner. It is impossible to focus on anything else while she is around.
I got lots of great photos but I kind of like this one.

Tomorrow:
Tomorow will be Spike's birthday.

Thanks Rick. There is nothing anyone can say other than what you said that will make any difference today but I'd like to ask all of you for one big favor.

Today when it crosses your mind that this is a rough one for me could you please pick up the phone or call your kid/kids into the room and just let them know how much you love them Don't assume they know. Remind them. That would make this a better day for me. I thank the government for making Spike's birthday a Federal holiday. That was nice of them.

I'll listen to the Lindsays play Schubert's String Quitet in C today, probably several times. I have four recordings of this piece but the first version I got was a gift many years ago from Spike for Christmas. He chose this piece because it had sailboats on the cover. That's all. Many years later I was watching INSPECTOR MORSE and I heard some mazing and moving music. It did sound familiar. I Googled it and found out it was the piece Spike had given me. It is now my all time favorite chamber piece. Morse likes it too.

Here's a pic of Spike talking to me the day he helped a new boat owner bring his boat up to the shack. The owner was a beginner and a bit trepidacious about the boat. Spike showed him what the boat could do. When Spike put the boat hard on the wind the owner got a bit nervous. Spike told him, "Relax. It's a Perrry design." My client took this photo and sent it to me with a note saying that he liked the photo becasue you can just see the pride in my face as Spike retold the adventure of the trip. I'm still very proud of him.

The school is closed today for MLK day, but I visited anyway and took my large Spike Burgee with me. Spike adds good karma to the project.

This is the burgee we will fly from the vessel when she gets splashed.

Bob,

My daughter headed back to school today and her mom and I got all mooshy and hugged the kapok out of her, as usual. She accepts it as her due and we never hold anything back. We are conscious of the preciousness of everything we love and the fleetingness of things in general.

I love the Schubert C major, especially the call and response in the first theme of the adagio, which is almost a blues figure. For me it evokes a pastoral scene at sunset, but I once listened to it on Amtrak heading south from NYC through the least scenic parts of NJ, and the contrast was pretty moving, too. I might put it on tonight if my wife is busy.

So, be well and know people you don't even know are with you today.

Today I came home to one daughter at a friend's house, one daughter in Las Vegas for a soccer tournament and one daughter getting ready for her 7th birthday party. I gave her a big, scratchy smooch. The other two will get some variant of that tonight.

God bless you, Bob.

My little girl, a no-school day, an extra-sunny winter afternoon, a bike ride on our tandem, and a stop at the park. Top it off with a ride back to the house under a beautiful sunset.

sunset bike park (2).jpg

Dinner soon, with my son (he didn't want to ride; I didn't want to push) and the little one at the table; video chat later with my oldest who is away at school. Many hugs and much gratefulness for all we have; especially one another. Fortunately for me, they are enthusiastic, willing huggers.

Maybe a movie, if dinner is done early enough. Maybe some games if they'd rather.

Definitely a glass or three raised in Spike's honor.

Peace to you and Jill and the rest of your family, Bob. You are in my thoughts.

TO SPIKE!!

Hear hear! To Spike!

I saw my 29 year old son yesterday for the first time in a month. He just got laid off and we were helping him move from Vancouver WA to his friend's place in Lincoln City OR. He got great big hug from me and his mom and an "I love you". We took my 25 year old daughter out to dinner tonight and she got the same. When they were young the last thing they would hear from me at night was "Good night, I love you" Never take anything for granted.

Thanks Joe. You got that right. Finally.

I had a decent day with help from you guys.
Had a nice dinner at the casino. Man oh man that is one bizarre place. But the food was extremely good. But walking through the casino to the restaurant was like a bad acid trip. I'm not sure who does the casting for the casino but they are very good.
I know I am going to have a nightmare tonight where my wife is taken by the casino life.
Maybe I'll have a good Spike dream. Probably not but you can always wish.
I'll wish.

Bob,

Here's to Spike, I'm hoisting my glass. Today our daughter brought her little tiny daughter over and just sat around talking. Life doesn't get a lot better than that. Her Mom made lunch, we changed some diapers, we talked about when she was little... life doesn't get much better than that.

I hope you have great Spike dreams of armor, laughters, good fun and love.

G'night,

Beau

Cave:
Simply beautiful.
37 years? You are a very lucky man. Mrs. Lamb looks lovely. Life is good.

Here is my honey pie taken yesterday.
If you look behind Violet you wil see a sort of elaborate cat stand. Spike built that.

My goodness, now that's a baby! Love the all orchids.

Here's what they turn into (from about 4 and 19 years ago, respectively). Snuggling with Mommy at age 2 and a nasty little squall at 17 provoke about the same reaction.

Eric:
That looks like a fun ride. I never had a daughter so I am envious. When Spike was born I thought, "Shitski, I'm going to have to clean around the toilet bow for the rest of my life." I'd gladly do that now.

The good news is that I got the Solti Passion today and I am playing it now. Good call, thanks for that tip. I'll try to reciprocate. You should try the Linn recording. Very good sound.
I must say I think you are correct. This is a marvelous, clear and nicely recorded version. I have five versions now and I am going to buy more. Why? Because every once and a while we ned a mystical, silly mission, i.e. something that other mortals cannot fathom.

I will own every recording of the St Mathew Passion. Damn it.

Next, on to vinyl versions.
A dash of sherry and Tally ho!

A friend of mine had a less cultural compulsion, he collected versions of "Ghost Riders in the Sky". He had about 230 when he joined them.
