My first thought was shipbuilders but since the species of tree was not mentioned it's hard to say for sure. Could've been alien shipbuiders though.

We actually have a grove like that up at the north end of Bainbridge Island. I believe it is earth movement (land slide) and then the trees start reaching to the sun again.....but the snow load argument sounds like a possibility too. The trees got bent over and then continued to grow......up.

Kim, I don't think your theory works on flat ground. I've got another theory, someone cut those trees down and left the stumps. The stumps sent out sprouts from the stump and those turned upward towards the sun. Redwood stumps send up multiple shoots once a tree is cut down. They form what my grandchildren call "fairy rings". See below.
