American Flags on Houses

Now that I have a modest piece of dirt, I was thinking having an American flag.

Is it, cheesy and overly-patriotic?
How does one size a flag for a house?
What are the rules on attachment points? Are there rules?

Oh, and if anyone is visiting Portland, and needs a room, I love to have guests.

Eye of the beholder.

No. Not cheesy at all. Sail around Maine and see how many homes have them flying on the lawn. I think it's classy.

The house is in the US, isn't it? I think it would be of questionable taste in Canada or Mexico.

Yes, Portland. Ostensibly Portland is the US, but I have heard referred to as, "Little Beirut". We'll leave the 53rd and 54th states aside for the moment. Maine is what I had in my mind's eye.

Like this but maybe a bit more squared away - and I think this one is mounted on the wrong side, too.

What I really was fishing for was pictures representative samples from follow Scantlingers of their installations. (jokes aside, Canukistanian samples of good installations most welcome :D )

Not cheesy. We have had a flag similar to the one in your picture mounted to the corner of our house by the front porch for years. Unfortunately it blew down in one of our spring storms and I have not remounted it yet because we are having some work done to a window near it soon otherwise I would post a picture. We're a pretty liberal family but don't believe that precludes being patriotic.

We also had one on a nice pole at our beach place:

We had a Star mast from Spartech with a flag up here for several years, I had to take it down for some project a while back and haven't reinstalled it yet. Will get around to it sometime. We always liked having a flag up. Sometime put up a flag on FRANCIS during the summer when we have lots of visitors in the harbor.

We saw all of the Swedish flags flying when traveling in Sweden and thought: "hey we could do that." But we used The Stars and Stripes on our pole

Flag pole is classy, I'll build one sometime. I have always wanted a hexagonal bird-cage wood spar; with a topmast, yard, and gaff. I'm not certain the Admiral will go for the full rig, but I'll start there and negotiate back to the single spar.

From the Chicago YC:

What is the story with the other national flags along the dock?

Keith, that flag pole at the H museum looks great! I guess I should look around for the "best" flag pole. I do like the spreaders for the topmast, nice touch!! B

My club growing up had a real J class mast as a flag pole.

It worked well from keeping anyone from successfully stealing the burgee since it took so long to pull down. Plenty of time to - say pull the cotter pin out of a prop and organize a defense.

Do I detect the voice of experience there? :)

Flag installation where we used to live. Around here, 50 shades of grey is not a book!

My expatriate wife thinks our obsession with the flag is overdone. It's everywhere - car dealerships, restaurants, office buildings, homes. In Finland you typically only see the flag on government installations. I was at an outdoor rock concert event years ago. There was a group of people flying a big Finish flag. It was actually a military flag with a lion flourish in the center of the cross. After flying for about 15 minutes, out of nowhere a group of army dudes showed up and tackled the guy carrying it. He was taken away in cuffs and the flag was confiscated.

It is common to fly something called an 'Isanan viiri' - Father's Flag. This is a long pennant with the family colors on it (typically blue and white, go figure).

I'm a fan of the U.S. flag. Love seeing it flying from homes. Don't care for it in a commercial setting, but it is fitting given our capitalist nature I suppose. Especially get a kick out of sailors flying a giant flag off the backstay on the 4th.

They sent me a six-foot flag when I pseudo-retired. I might fly that off the backstay this fofa joo-lye.

We have a tall flag pole at work. This picture is of the flag we fly at launchings and special events like when the Blangels come for SeaFair. Normally the flag is smaller so we don't get dismasted on a windy day.

Tucky, I love it!! I used to dress up the red Morgan 4/4 with American flags and my British friends would give me endless grief about it being inappropriate. I'm sure those watching the parade loved it.
