Strongest recorded Atlantic Hurricane. Cyclones/typhoons in the pacific are commonly much stronger, etc. Keep in mind, prior to 1964, we only knew about hurricanes that either made landfall or were reported by ships and offshore observations were pretty spotty even into the 80's so "ever" is a bold claim.

Massive and likely deadly? Absolutely. Some tracks come out way and strong possibility my daughter and future grandchild in Tampa are going to cop it so I'm watching the model runs closely.

Oh, boy. Do they have plans to skedaddle?

My Neph and wife live on Marathon Key. They are on a cruise in the Med. Luckily, some good friends are driving their cars and pets up to Naples (FL, not Italy)

If thing holds to predictions they might not have a house to which they can return.

She is HR director at a local/regional charity with a shelter. Planning on staying despite being 6 months preggers.

Not Irma, but a good indication of how high the water in Texas got.

there are some pretty horrendous videos coming in including a NOAA plane flying into the eye.

Amazing times, these.

I have to admit it is surreal in some ways being so far away from any possibility of something like that. We do have our severe weather phenomenon such as tornadoes and extreme cold/snow, but nothing as devastating on such a large scale.

That said, back in '96 there was a strong cyclonic storm that hit Lake Huron.

Well, Daughter and family (Son-in-law, Step Grand daughter and grandchild due in Dec) are going to ride it out in Tampa. Newer house rated for Cat 3, 22' above sea level a couple of miles inland from Tampa Bay, hurricane shutters installed and all stocked up and gassed up.

Guess I won't sleep much tomorrow night.

Other daughter's boyfriend flew to Miami to help his non evacuating parents prep and clean up so she is worried although latest track suggests Miami will be spared the worst.

I weathered a lot of hurricanes as a kid in Florida but this is a big one.

News from both Miami and Tampa is all came through without any real damage. Power of dad worrying, I guess. With the path moving west of Miami and then back east of Tampa and the over land weakening, direct hit in daughter turned into a 60 mile miss by a weakening CAT 1 rather than the direct strong cat 3 they were forecast to receive. Still getting lots of rain and expecting additional surge.

In my past life in Taiwan, we'd get 1 or 2 of similarly sized typhoons a season. The smaller ones were good windsurf material. The largest ones were fetal position in the bathtub. Stay safe everyone who may be in its path.

Your plate seems to be loading up Larry. Is surgery done or pending ?

Life continues Ed. Surgery postponed pending some radiation treatments scheduled for week of 18 Sept up in NYC. Goal is to try to kill the tumor with that as it's location hugging my aorta is still a pretty tricky surgery. I probably should update the "health" thread.

I wandered through a bunch of these and there are some idiots who are outside trying to prove they can stand in 150 MPH winds! Darwin award applicants.

I kept waiting for the Weather Channel idiot to get nailed with a palm frond or piece of sheet metal. Decapitation live must be good for ratings.

There was a CBS (I think) TV reporter walking along a street who nearly got nailed by a traffic sign which blew off a pole right by him. There is no need for them to do this. It's just bravado. Well located remotely operated cameras would do just as well.

I said Marathon, but turns out they moved to Summerland Key. The house might still be there, but I'd be super surprised if it's not a total loss. The last few paragraphs of this Fox News (fake news) report is chilling:

Summerland is the next key up from Cudjoe (toward Miami). He had a nice boat, too....
