NCAA Brackets Busted

And I couldn’t be happier. UMBC, the lowly 16 seed knocked off the regional and tournament #1 seed with a 74-54 upset. First time a men’s 16 has defeated a number 1. Something like 99.4% of brackets were busted last night.

As the dad of a UMBC grad, I couldn’t be more pleased. The small honors college defeats Goliath. Lots of happy (and shocked) Retrievers today.

My wife mentioned this to me and I understand it has something to do with basketball. UMBC really is a great school and the symbolism of the win over UVA is particularly rich.

Whenever someone comes at me with stats like that, I usually mumble something about not following {the antithesis of the subject at hand}.

Oh, thanks, I don't follow pro wrestling.

UMBC gave me a plaque and an umbrella and a tie and some other stuff a few months ago (December 7th) for having been there now for 40 years.

So yeah, it's pretty special, thanks for mentioning it, Larry.

Trouble was, I was so amped up after the game, I couldn't get to sleep until 3 a.m., and then I got up at 5 a.m, so I was such a jet-lagged effin mess at the CBYRA Awards and was called on at the last minute to give out the CRCA Awards which I mumbled through incoherently so there was that.

At least this game should be over by 10 pm and tomorrow we are closed for Spring Break. So yeah GO RETRIEVERS!!! (chesapeakes, not goldens, yellows, labradors or otherwise)

Sorry Tim. I was rooting for K-State last night.

Go Cats!

Edit: It's really cool that UMBC knocked of UVA, but I'm a K-State grad, so I can't help myself. Also, game last night was a defensive struggle.

I get all of my sports news from the WSJ, last week they had an article giving technical reasons why UVA was the most likely #1 seed to be upset perhaps ever. This morning Jason Gay wrote much like our own Tim Ford, going on about Retrievers.

Nabors Drilling is doing a well we have an interest in, and they have a Tech in Houston named Larry Howard who is sending me an email every time they run a directional survey, about 7-8 times a day. Our own Larry denies that he's moonlighting.

It was great to see the Retrievers get some headlines and even better for the school to get some attention as a truly fine public university. Star player is a grad student and 2 starters have 4.0 GPAs. A bit of a nerd school and diverse as it can be (the Commons looks like a UN assembly). One of only 4 schools in MD with ABET Accredited Mechanical Engineering programs (that includes the Naval Academy and Hopkins). Their twitter feed was hilarious during and after the UVA upset.

UMBC sends more African Americans to MD-PhD programs than any other school in the country.

Including the current Surgeon General.

Thy do tend to punch above their weight but rank very low on the “party school” list. Chris only considered them because I attended a lunch where Hraboski (UMBC President) was the guest speaker. I found him terrifically inspiring and focused on taking smart kids and helping them succeed. Based on that, we scheduled a visit.
