DC Driving

On the way to the hospital this morning, letting WAZE route us through the back streets of NE DC. Stopped in traffic at a stop sign and rear ended by a van belonging to a local business. Very minor damage. Other driver had license and registration but no insurance documentation. Given the minor damage, chose to not call in the cops and be late for my appointment for a 8 hour transfusion.
Filed with my insurance (USAA) who contacted the company for insurance info. The “owner” refused to id himself or provide insurance info and insisted that Lynne shifted into reverse and backed into his driver. Then he told the USAA claims agent to F off in precise terms.
If you are in DC or the inner suburbs and get hit by a “Lenox Medical Services” van, you might want to wait for the police.

I imagine USAA or their reinsurers will get find a way to get paid if they don't want to write it off.

Dash cams. I'm sorry to hear you experienced that. And Waze sometimes does some really nutty routing for a very small time savings.

Likely will not need fixing. We will see what the appraiser says. With my deductible, it may come in less than that in cost and looks like a protracted legal battle to get anything from the other party. Damage appears to be limited to license plate bolt witness marks and some small scratches on the back bumper. 2007 Lexus with 166k miles that has experienced parking lot scars on the doors, etc. Frame mounted trailer hitch seems to have kept him from doing any other damage.
Good thing we were not in Lynne’s toy. That would have really pissed me off.

Cripes. I'm glad the damage was so minor.

Always wanted to emulate Emily and Rollo LaRue in "If I had a Million" (1932)....ride around and demolish the vehicles of those who drive like complete assholes. May as well throw in those who lie about the facts, afterward, too.

"The authors aren't sure why fatal hit-and-runs are rising, but as with the general upward trend in traffic deaths,
they suspect distracted driving is a factor."
Gee...ya think?

Yup, but what bothers me most is that proportionally more people are driving off and leaving their victims to die by the side of the road. I suspect drugs and, sad to say, immigration status.

I started using a front a rear dash cam a couple years ago. It's saved me a bunch of hassle.
Just don't do anything that incriminates yourself!

The first time I drove in the Czech Republic my guys equipped me with these cameras. It was mandatory there, and in Russia, and in Poland, and in Bulgaria, etc.... I'm thrilled to know that Washington DC has sunk the same level.

Wow, that's terrible (the driving off part.) I rode my motorcycle in most of this week. I'm having cars rip past me on the right hand side, in the right hand lane, which is ending, merging into the adjacent lane. Scary and unnecessary. I'm doing 70 in a 65, in the slow lane, and it's still not fast enough for these people.

Other drivers, particularly distracted ones, My biggest worry with Chris buying a CBR 800 last summer. He commutes T/F Pax (about 5 local miles) with it and country rides on the weekend. Leather jacket, reinforced boots and impact gloves plus a full face helmet but that’s not going to stop some distracted F-350 driver or teenage girl on her hand held phone.

Yup, I wear all of that too, even in the summer heat. I am more paranoid about oncoming traffic drifting into my lane than ever before.
I've observed that there is this new "riding armor" that you can buy. It has chest and spine plates. I see the sportbike squids wearing this stuff in T-shirts and shorts. Your head and torso will be intact but you'll need a skin graft for the other 80% of your body as you go sliding along the asphalt.

As someone who still carries the scars of my stupidity as a young motorcycle rider.... PLEASE be careful. I think Larry's right, it has become far more dangerous since the invention of the mobile phone with a screen that can show movies!
In our area, the problem is being rear-ended on blind turns. A friend was hit from behind while driving his 1 ton flatbed. A F-150 going about 65 came around a blind curve and hit my buddy who was driving at the 35 MPH speed limit as he approached some driveways. The 1 ton flatbed was just find, the F-150 not so much.

Nothing like a one ton flatbed and a heavy duty towbar...
Oh, and a front bull bar.

Lenox Medical Supply Services claims on their website to supply to American University and the US census bureau. They appear to be a scooter rental service. The least you can do is post a flame on their Google rating.
