10 people, including brothers and all the kids

One enormous de-boned turkey breast—we are so done with carcasses! Bones will make gravy.
Brussels sprouts, sautéed with bacon and then finished in the oven
Mashed potatoes
Stuffing
Some vegan shit, might even be good
Pecan pie with whupped cream
Just counted 12 bottles of wine and a case of beer—no idea what the concept is there.
Compostable bamboo plates

Cold bike ride this morning to work up an appetite

So incredibly much to be thankful for, including you guys and, especially, Rick for providing this place!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and yours. Much to be thankful for.

There will be 7 of us with sister and BIL, niece and grand niece. It will be our first thanksgiving without Jess as she is on Florida. Always has been her favorite family holiday. Sniff.

Turkey and stuffing in the oven. Stuffed ham ready to eat. Various root veggies to roast. Beans to steam. Always wine in the rack so we’ll serve something. The ladies have put together some desserts as well.

Happy Thanksgiving.

We did the deed yesterday with all the kids, spouses, grand kids, and three dogs. It was a festive day and certainly showed us how much we have to be thankful for!

Small gathering here. Large chicken (we got tired of turkey several years ago), garlic mashed, stuffing, salad, wine, pumpkin pie & apple pie. All but the pies cooked from scratch by my daughter and I. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Just ran over to Elliot Bay Marina in WHITECAP and picked up the kids (and Lucia the nicest puppy in the world.)
Easy trip over in 13 knots gusting 15 from the S. Mild ride. Beats the very crowded ferry!

Trip back will be a bit more interesting as 25-30 knots winds forecasted.

Taking kids home it was 28 gusting 31.

VERY happy with her performance in those conditions, especially as it was a night crossing in the famous Puget Sound Square Waves.

Always nice to find your new boat is all you had hoped for and even better.

Just back from Prudence Island-- the ferry ride over yesterday was a bit bracing! Had a big feast with friends who have a house on the island. Came back today and took the sails off. Pulling the stick next week.

Kim, that's a lovely German Shepherd! Glad to hear WHITECAP knows how to handle whitecaps. :)

We are working on Thanksgiving Dinner #3 now. I'm taking a short break to catch up, tooooo much turkey!!

It is wonderful to see the kids all grown up and acting like adults! Amazing. The grand daughters all arrayed in matching outfits, ultra-cuteness.

Pouring rain since right after we got in from our Thanksgiving sail. Pictures below. It's great to see it rain like this - we really REALLY need it.

Cheers!

Thanksgiving Day Sail - we're thinking maybe this should be a tradition!

Our Marine, out of uniform and out of spec haircut, a result of too much time in grad school and not enough time on drill ;)

A wee dram of the good stuff for the entire crew....

Enjoying the fruits of hours of sanding and varnishing.... Happy Thanksgiving.

We had a fine meal at my folks place.

Counter clockwise from right: me, daughter, wife, dad (he beat his cancer. woohoo), step mom, step sister-in-law, nephews in law. Step brother is taking the picture.

We fly back the 28th. Probably too tight a schedule to meet.

No, he was still working at the time.

I built most of it.

It’s a great job, the joints are really thin and the window frame fit is tight,

Any tricks to those tight joints or just measured and hand cut?

Steve might be the most skilled craftsman I have ever met.
His work is to die for.
(And for those who have not met him, he is also one of the nicest people I know.)

Steve,

Can you guys just order up logs like that in your area, or are these logs which were cut for you? I'm amazed at how uniform and straight they are.

We used the "Scandinavian Full Scribe" method. Hard to explain with words, but once you learn process, it is not too difficult. Check out some YouTube vids for the gist.

I was just a peaon working for the master log builder that my Dad hired to do the log work. After the walls were set, it was just me finishing the place.

I ended up working for the log builder for several years and about half a dozen homes. Got pretty good at fitting logs, but never as good as the master.

Steve, wouldn't a laser level speed the process up a lot?? I get the idea of fitting each log to the one below, but do you ever plane/cut the top of the lower log so that you start out with a level surface? (Or at least a smooth one)

Beau,

With the Full Scribe method, using very large diameter trees, it is best to do the log work at a large, flat area so that machinery can be driven all around the structure. My fathers house site is very near the edge of a steep slope. Therefore, the logs were cut, fit, and stacked off-site (15 miles north) at the log builder's FLAT pasture. Logs were then dismantled and re-set with a large crane that could 'reach' across the house.

An alternate, inferior type of log construction uses small logs that are 100% "machined". These generic "Lincoln" logs can be assembled into any house design without custom fitting. These are much cheaper, faster, and more like a "kit".
