So Ella is selling Girl Scout cookies again this year as a Brownie. I don't know if anyone here wants cookies and and doesn't have a local girl to support, but that's you then here is the link to her cookie site. I would have been delighted to get in-person delivery, but given the distance involved I selected the shipping option.

Order placed. Please tell Ella that she will be dearly loved by the crew of MAYAN, as they are fanatical supporters of Thin Mint cookies (and thereby not so thin crewmembers). I'd no idea that one could order and have them shipped. Very cool idea.

Thanks guys. I think they are realizing that online orders are the way of the future and seem to be pushing them in favor of the more traditional door to door sales. Plus they get their money up front. It is still limited to the time frame that each area does their sales though.

Boy Scouts has started doing the same thing with popcorn. Which is the only way I get that yummy popcorn until Layton is old enough to be a Cub Scout, since nobody comes by the house to sell it. I have been buying it from Mrgnstrn's son that way for the past few years.

We still have Ella go through the neighborhood and sell them because we feel it is a good experience for her. I remember selling all sorts of things as a kid in school as well as a Scout.

Having an Eagle Scout son and a Girl Scout daughter, plus having done years of volunteer work within Boy & Girl Scout troops and three different Sea Explorer ships, my wife and I cannot pass up a chance to help the kids, I'll be ordering some boxes. Oh, and I even took a part time job as a young man delivering pallets of cookies by large truck to different troops in the local council for the cookie maker who had a bakery in my area. There is nothing like fresh still warm cookies off the production line.

Thank you for your purchases gentlemen. Ella met her sales goal and when asked if she wanted to keep selling around the neighborhood or call it good enough, she asked if she could keep selling and transfer the sales above what she needed to other girls in her troop to help them meet their goals too.

Sometimes I wonder where we got this kid...

Slick and I have a lot of quirky things in common:
- we both have a daughter named Ella
- we both have very close family members who attended Sarah Lawrence College
- we both have been observed in some state of disrepair at St Mary's College of Maryland (although I was probably in much worse shape than Slick)
- we both have spent quality time with Cap'n Dickweed and quite a bit of it in the backyard of a pink house on Pomander Street
- we've both helmed a Hinckley SW 42 named Sparky, albeit in different directions and
- we've both heard lengthy renditions of episodes involving the police and a certain character from Cranston R.I. named Jack, albeit not at the same time

so I guess that makes us blood brothers....or something. GO THE ELLA!

nah, Tim's got the right of it... but there's more...

- my actual brother is named Tim, so that adds to the blood brother aspect I'm sure. Seems legit.
- there were many times that Tim and I were in the same place or were supposed to be, but it took us years to actually meet in person.
- the back yard of that little pink house on Pomander street is probably the location where we were both in the same place for the longest amount of time.

Been living life large on the Tagalongs. Chocolate and peanut butter make a nice combo for quick snacks on the hiking trail. Glad Ella made her goal and then some!!!

I think I've see the Nat Resources Police in our creek once in 10 years and never a CG vessel. We do see the occasional eco-nazi in a kayak making sure no one is illegally cutting down bushes or trimming a tree branch without an environmental permit.

Yeah, we have an island full of eco-kayakers and eco-beach walkers. I have to answer many questions as they scrutinize everything I do near my waterfront. (Must be because they lost that big dock battle to me. They really tried everything to keep me from getting a dock permit and the city was enabling them big time. I sued the city and won.)

So I set out to make them friends. I have managed to snare a couple of them who are now much more friendly towards me. One of them had a lot of clout as the biologist of the Tribe (everything on the water has to be blessed by the local Native American Tribe.) So I invited him over and asked his advice as to how I should best deal with my waterfront. He apparently appreciated it greatly and I got Tribe approval for my dock.

Absolutely. When I need something, i put on a pair of blue jeans and some work shoes and drop by the planning and zoning office. I tell them I want to do it correctly but can they help me find my way through all of the rules. Amazing how helpful they are when you ask them for help as opposed to arguing with them all of the time. Of course, my neighbors and I show up at zoning and permit public meetings and generally join them in fighting high density development along the shore and I have been thanked for our support and told that we are considered the "good guys" and they will give us as much slack as possible.

Well..... there's a long story about why the Harbor Master and her Deputies are armed.

Basically, the US Federal Gov. subsidizes border patrol by locals who are trained and have experience as police officers. We applied for a grant years ago, and our $280,000 patrol boat, along with over half the salaries of this mini-police force is paid for out of your US Federal tax dollars. I suppose that a "bad person" might get arrested occasionally, but the dollars/criminal ration of our Harbor Master and her team is ridiculous!

The good news is that we have VERY little theft in the harbor and it used to be a problem. An armed deputy walks the docks 7x24 and they have caught numerous folks trying to steal outboard etc... More importantly, to me, they have scared away the scum that used to bother my previous wife down at the harbor. Because they are sworn police officers, they can also respond to calls from the CA Highway Patrol, County Sheriff, and Santa Cruz Police when called upon. A few years back two of our Harbor Deputies caught an escaped prisoner and took him down quite dramatically in front of four or five boatloads of racing sailors. I wasn't there, but friends gave them a rousing cheer and offered to buy them a round of drinks at the YC once they got off duty. They came around and received more than one round.

They are also really nice folks. As some of you know, we have a tough homeless problem in our town. These guys have kept a lot of folks from sneaking aboard boats that are rarely used and trashing them. Guns aren't needed for that purpose, but being a sworn officer does. And, after all, we're only paying for about 25% of it with the Fed and State subsidies.

Well, certainly the government giveaways help with affordability at the local level.

Don't you mean Appalachia?

uh, I don't think so. We're a bit east of Appalachia here in NoVA as far as I have understood. Western Virginia would be though. Although under normal times, I'd be ok with a road trip to the mountains to do girl delivery and mix in some hiking and camping. I generally think of this area as the Chesapeake region since our waterways drain into the bay. Although we can also be called Mid-Atlantic, Washington/Baltimore, National Capitol, and probably a slew of other regional names.

Sadly, I think for the most part girl delivery is out this year unless it is in our neighborhood and surrounding area.

So, a year ago when Ella first started doing this, I asked my (then) g/f if her family would be interested in ordering from Ella.

She said "Yes, actually, we do not have a dealer at the moment, we need a new one"

We had a local GS that we learned lives down the street come by and leave a love note on our door with ordering instructions.. Like Tim, I am hooked on the Tagalongs. When you are not on the trail, keep a box in your fridge....Yum!

I asked the Admiral and was told "in no uncertain terms" that Girl Scout Cookies were not allowed in the house. We've been fighting our battle of the bulge around here. If the Girl Scouts could just sell broccoli or spinach! (I will miss the thin mints tremendously!)

Beau, I know that the struggle to avoid the cookies is real. My mom always orders extra thin mints and has them shipped to our house. It's easy to sit down and eat a sleeve in short order. My real weakness is the Samoas though.

I would note that the Admiral said "house" and not "boat"... just kidding and no worries. It's been a bit of a struggle to get Ella out to canvas the neighborhood this year, but today she has a goal to drop off 300 flyers. I'm not sure that there are even 300 houses in our immediate neighborhood. She has her little brother in tow, so not sure how far they will make it anyway.

We have re-started the exercise, reduced the caloric intake, and are in that first week of post-holiday-pain. How the HELL did I put on 10 pounds in two weeks??
