Getting off of Quicken...

Postby avramd » Sun Jun 21, 2020 9:18 am

Does anybody have any accounting software they can recommend that can import from Quicken, and doesn't make them want to kill themselves every couple of years?

Also, does anybody know if the new subscription-based Quicken products give you access to your data in an open documented format that other applications can accurately import? I'm afraid if I switch from a local application to a cloud-based service, it won't even be possible to switch to something else later without losing my history, or with it becoming flawed/broken.

I've been using Quicken 2007 for Mac since, well, 2007. I stopped upgrading b/c every time it took months to learn all the new bugs and shortcomings and develop new processes to deal with them all. Every time it happened, it was the most stressful event of my life for 2-3 months - worse than most break-ups. Q2007 is finally permanently broken b/c they found a way to disable downloading transactions from financial institutions; that was the key feature for me that made the product essential.

I figure switching to the latest quicken will probably be less painful at the moment than switching away from Quicken. But Intuit has really doubled down on making sure software you purchase stops working pretty soon, so I'm wondering if switching to some other product line will maybe be less painful in the long run.

Sorry, I got nothing. I was probably using an even older version of Quicken when we moved over our finances to Sarah's system. She has an Excel spreadsheet that she keeps track of everything in.

Sorry, can't help either. I've been using Quicken even longer than you, but not on a Mac. PC instead. I used to upgrade every few years and now have the subscription. I can't comment on the Mac version but I can say the PC version does not fit the description you gave for the Mac version. I haven't really needed to learn much new with each upgrade, and the PC version must have far fewer bugs as I haven't really had to deal with any.

My present version (which is now always the newest version as I went with the subscription a couple of years ago so get every upgrade as it comes along) is not cloud based, it still resides on my computer. I use the 'Home and Business' version as I also use it to manage a small company's books.
