Help Sophia von H. with a survey

Postby Benno von Humpback » Fri Oct 30, 2020 1:25 pm

"I’ve made this survey to test whether experts are any better than non-experts at identifying species from acoustic images when there’s no environmental context or fishing data. I’ve gotten great feedback so far, please take it if you want! Should take about 15min."

Eric,

Happy to try it. Sue's son, Bronson is supposed to head to Galway for a post-doc in January.

In what? I hope the lockdown gets eased soon, for his sake.

Sophie and Jónsí are leaving around that time. She's starting a postdoc at UC Davis, but it will be virtual because COVID-19. Their plan is to rent a place in Annapolis to be in a time zone midway between CA and Iceland, where his business partners are, and just far enough from us. Know anything about the condo/slum dwelling market in Nap?

Eric
Computational biology, whatever that is. He’ll have to quarantine when he gets there.
There are lots of new apartment buildings but they aren’t cheap. No vacancies on Kent Island. Right now downtown DC probably has lots of choices.

Ah, well if anyone show up near the UC Davis area and want's to do any sailing, my son is in charge of the team.

Similarly, down here in the county. Hard to get houses. Time on the market is a few weeks and many sell for more than ask in bidding wars. Apartments are available but you have to take what’s available. That and I’m not sure they would find St Mary’s or Calvert all that riveting in a lock down situation.

Is Monday OK, or does she need it this weekend?

I have a friend completing his PhD in Marine Biology--Steelhead (Sea run Rainbow Trout) here in BC. Would he be a useful research participant?

I think so, as long as he self-identifies on the qualifying questions.

Thank you so much, Rob. I would have thought you would be good at this type of thing from the oil prospecting game.

I think the point is that expertise matters. As I understand it, this is for a part of her thesis dealing with the value of machine learning for identifying fish from sonar signatures. AI will undoubtedly make most of our intuitive, impressionistic, and diagnostic skills obsolete and sooner than we think.

38.5.

Intro tends to bias responses toward species discussed. Background should probably include any training/experience in data analytics, radar returns, etc.

Thank you all so much. Yes, Larry, knowing what echograms look and how noisy they are like probably helps.
