Looking for noise-cancelling unicorn

Hey everyone,

I'm struggling here. I'm about to send back my Bose NC700's, exercising their 90-day trial period. They are so close - functionality-wise they do what I want. But they have a horrible to the point of being unuseable UI, and their programming is flaky enough that about 2/10 times that I try to use them, it takes a couple minutes just to get them to do their basic job.

This is all I want:

  • Good noise cancelling (the basic function)
  • * "reverse noise cancellation" for calls (i.e. cancels my background noise for you if I'm on a call with you).
The Bose does that. But it is un-useable. Does anybody have a good headset that does both of these things, and does not drive you crazy with unreliability and impossible to use or non-existent controls for key features?

* The "reverse noise cancellation" is the problematic feature - most don't have this, and AFAICT, there is no standard term for it. So, it seems to be impossible to search or filter for it. In fact, even the NC700 does not distinguish it as a feature. I had to do a side-by-side parsing of the descriptions of this with their QC35 Gaming headset; originally I misinterpreted the QC35 as having the feature too. It turns out it just has noise blocking for the mic - all passive.

Here are the anti-requirements that the Bose has added to my list (this is also a rant, so stop/skim if this is getting too long - but there might be a good laugh in there :-) :

  • does not auto-switch to another device, i.e. when I'm using them on a zoom call and somebody calls my phone, does not take me off the zoom call
  • does give me explicit simple and immediate direct control over which is the currently active device. For example single-press one button to cycle to the next connected device. The NC700 has no control for this, the instructions say "To switch between active devices, pause audio on one device and then start audio on the other device." For phone calls, there is no "pause" or "start" audio control,
  • does not use touch controls/gestures that are likely to happen by mistake, or don't work if I'm wearing gloves
  • basic functions actually work all the time. Frequently the Bose doesn't auto-connect to devices it is already paired with, it goes directly into BT pairing mode. Telling the devices to connect to it doesn't work. I have to either power-cycle the headset or clear and re-pair my devices.
  • does not require an app to use it's features. Many of the Bose features are only accessible through a phone app. Frequently the app doesn't recognize the headset and I need to delete and repair it, which takes minutes. Furthermore, this requires the phone to be actively connected to the headset, which means I can't disconnect the phone to prevent calls from taking over the headset when I'm using it with Zoom on my computer. This is funny - you need to use the app to tell the headset to disconnect from your phone. But then once disconnected, the app can no longer control the headset, so you need to power-cycle the headset to actually use it for a phone call. It's a bit slow after somebody has already called me.

One thing I will admit that I could try, that would solve about 3/4 of these problems, is to stop using Bluetooth entirely. I could clear the paired device list, and only use the wire. That would prohibit me from accessing the app-only features, but the ability to disconnect BT devices is the only one of those that I really need regularly.

A few comments:

- One of my primary reasons for going from a MacBook Air to the MacBook Pro was to get back to a headset jack. For "work" (meaning important stuff) I always use the wired headset (over-the-ear noise-canceling Bose about 4 years old). The headset doesn't have background noise canceling. But, I believe that Zoom does that itself. I have a voice recording microphone that doesn't do anything other than shape the sound the way a recording engineer would do it. I've found folks on the other end aren't hearing themselves talking (easy version of noise-canceling) but they don't hear the surrounding sounds like leaf blowers and kids talking.

- For use with an iPhone and iPad I use the Beats in the year noise-canceling headset. It doesn't have a great microphone, but hey I'm on a phone. Trying to get high-quality sound over a cell phone connection is a waste of time.

- Over the years I've had great luck with Bose in the sound quality space and terrible luck with them in every other way. Sigh. Great example of a company not understanding tech outside of their core area.

I don't own them, but the Sony's get good reviews.

Disappointed to hear how bad the Bose are! Premium price is supposed to beget a superior product.

Bose is based in the town where I grew up. I worked on the speaker lines in college. The founder, Amar Bose, died in 2013. He taught acoustics at MIT practically up until his death. I met someone while working on my boat last week who was an engineer there and left because of the back-stabbing culture he experienced. Hard to hear, and if Amar were still alive I'll bet it wouldn't exist. "Better Sound through Research" is no joke. That was the culture.

By default, Zoom uses a noise cancelling technology to remove continuous noises from the sound. My flute teacher and I discovered it could remove basically the entire sound of the flute in certain registers. There is a way to turn it off, but we didnt have success with it in a short trial, so we switched to Facetime.

I often have to switch between platforms: Zoom, Webex, Teams (company solution). I have a pair of inexpensive Plantronics that move relatively seamlessly and have an an automatic pause/mute function when you pull them off your head.

When I used to fly a lot (200k a year) I gave up on noise cancelling because all it did was cut out the ambient noise and make it easier for me to hear conversations across the plane. I'm a big fan of Shure SE425 - good accuracy and you won't hear a bomb going off next to you. Just smile and nod.... Etymotic is also doing really interesting things with noise cancelling earplugs.

I have had a similar experience with Bose. I got a high $$ pair of Bose "SoundSport Free" earbuds for a work gift, and if I had paid money for them, I would have sent them back. Generally, their products are good..these were just designed terribly. They have two terrible design ideas on these..First, it is a master/slave design, so Bose did not put a mic in the Left bud to avoid latency..and they also decided on phone calls only the Right bud functions since it has the mic...again, the official reason from their support team is to avoid latency in the master/slave design, and they don't seem to want to fix it. Too bad. I have had good luck with listening to other Bose products like headphones...but generally can't justify the high cost.

Speaking of Bose's HQ, my starter wife's family is from that area. Used to drive past the cool Bose building & complex up on the hill, along the Mass Pike maybe?? all the time! Actually, my forever wife is actually from Somerville, MA, so we should see it some more, but I dunno how much family she has left up there for us to visit.

Shawn, Yep, that's it. The "mountain" as it's called, really a hill as you call it, is just fill that was created constructing the Mass Pike.

It is cool looking. I think the last time I saw it, I didn't think I would ever have the play money to own any Bose equipment. The last time we were up that way was actually for a wedding..usually, it's been funerals.

Hey all, thought I would share the final straw that broke the Bose NC700 camel's back. It does not support wired microphone, stereo playback only.

To be more accurate, I should say "The wire it came with is a stereo playback wire only." L/R/ground. I suppose I could order a 2.5mm to 3.5mm 4-conductor cable, but Bose doesn't deserve my time and effort. It would be ludicrous for this headset to support wired microphone use but not supply the appropriate cable or mention it in the manual. Of course that would not top the list of what is already ludicrous about this product.

So, I'm returning it. Back to the drawing board... Or drawing bored I suppose I should say.
