Larry Howard has problems

Postby Ish » Sat Apr 24, 2021 1:40 pm

Damn, there's a lot of something going around right now. From Boomer on SA:

I just received this message from IB's wife Lynne:

Boomer, I wanted to let you know that IB is in the ICU. He was hospitalized on Wednesday. The new chemo he received last Thursday has overwhelmed him. He is fighting a very tough fight.

That's the last thing I wanted to hear this morning. IB needs our help, lot's of positive energy and the mass power of prayer. Even if you don't usually pray, please say a prayer for him, and if you have a chance, a few more prayers throughout the day. It doesn't even have to be a complicated thought or prayer, just a positive request for help.

There is strong scientific evidence indicating that faith and prayer help us and others with experiencing greater health physically, mentally and psychologically. Overall most conclusions are supportive of the positive influences of prayer and positive faith on human health, healing and functioning.

Well shit!

I am going to go round up all the positive energy I can find around here and send it his way.

(He and I had become phone and text buddies over our treatments.)

Shit, shit, shit. I will call Lynne tomorrow. Larry was only a mile from me before we moved (and now only about 5 away)...Ajax and Benno and Slick, and I and others have been at his dock a lot. Need to check in and see what I can do. Thank you for the heads up, Jim...I just talked to Larry a couple weeks ago.

MoeAlfa/Eric/Benno just posted this on the SA site.

Hi, All.

Just an update: As of Tuesday, Larry was alert with improving numbers, but the plan was to go home on hospice care. There’s the prospect of some good time with family, but it seems the sarcoma fight is over.

My wife is in text communication with Lynne, but we have not been asking for updates out of respect for her time and privacy. I will post what news I get.

Hope everyone here is well.

Eric

Oh no!!!

This hurts... badly.

It is great that he got to die at home with those he loved. I'm sure he'll be missed the world around.

If I had a best friend, he was it. I had hoped there would be time to go down and say goodbye and I’m pretty broken up. I hope Lynne is okay and will ask for help if she needs it.

I've been trying to write something down all day... and failing. I didn't know Larry as well as some here, but I'm glad that I did know him, and wish I had known him better. I wish I had taken him up on more offers to come down and visit, but I will cherish the times that I did. I always wanted to pick his brain for fighter pilot stories, but never really got around to it.

He was very good at bringing friends together, he was generous, kind, and so many other good things. He will be greatly missed.

Andy, if there was a hidden side to Larry, we never saw it. Kind and generous describe so much of the man.

I just love the fact that he saw me when I was sick and scared and generally wanting my mommy, and still thought I was someone he would choose to sail offshore with. ...and was generous enough to tell me.

We did a 2-up race together on my boat couple of seasons ago and had a blast. He got us to the line a full minute late and then we did the “mummy wrap” with the kite, where the bow man (me) gets wound to the forestay by the sail and the sheets. We still did okay.

He was imperturbable under pressure, never raised his voice, never made it seem like he knew more, even though he always did. What a model captain and, in some ways, the big brother I never had. I and Janell, who also loved him dearly, will miss him so much!

Larry mentioned Lynne had a sister in Melbourne who wasn’t well.

When you see her, please let her know we are happy to help out, if she needs it.

He was someone I was looking forward to getting to know better. We chatted about cars and he was very proud of his son’s impressive autocross skills.

Andy and Eric,
I did not know Larry, but I have found your thoughts very moving. We live in challenging times and can become insulated from losses like Larry's family is experinecing, and his friends like you two. If you have an opportunity please let his wife know his loss has brought some tears to complete strangers a country away,

Tom

I teared up when I read Eric’s post this morning. Susan teared up when I told her why I was in tears. Larry was such a good guy.

Eric, he’s not looking like he wants his mommy in that pic!

I was hoping to meet him at a dinner a bunch of us had after he did a race on Rob’s boat in Rhode Island. He was too spent to make it. Completely understandable but I was touched that he expressed genuine sorrow to me about missing it. Solid character.

Lynne sent me a nice note yesterday, but everytime I try to read it my vision gets blurry.
