Scantlings IRL

With Larry’s passing, it occurred to me how these forums enable many connections between Scantlingers, but many/most of us have never met “in real life”. The times I have met folks have been great: Catching up with Kim and Beau over drinks or lunch during various trips to the west coast, grabbing a beer with Trevor in Rhode Island, and benefiting from some sage perspective on dementia from Eric/Benno. Keith and I have a long-pending tele skiing date at Mad River Glen (‘21-22 season!?). It would be great to expand this.

Now that things are opening up, hopefully there will be opportunities to connect. I will be in Newport RI for most of the Summer, and welcome meeting up with anyone with plans to be in the area. First round’s on me.

Charlie, have you noticed that it's hard to come by tele gear these days? I've seen a "telemarking is dead" article in a skiing magazine. Let's ski together 21-22.

In the meantime let's take Quill out together this season if you're game. I should be in the water this week, maybe next.

Yes, tele seems to have been usurped by AT in the backcountry. The ability to skin up while maintaining alpine technique down is compelling. Though I always tell people that telemark is one of those rare things that it looks harder than it is. Little know fact: “Telemark” is Norwegian for “Hey guys, wait up!”

We will be in Jamestown starting mid-June. Would love to get out on Quill.

Thanks,

Charlie

Just about the time we were going to figure out how to Tele-ski Marker came out with these great (but somewhat heavy) bindings that let us free-heel along and climb with skins while using our AT skis and boots. Neither my #1 son nor I ever bothered to learn to Tele after that. Fortunately, for an old duffer like me, I could get the weight back down by buying some DPS carbon skis which are so light they feel weird. My son picked up so Vokle Gotamas for the same reason - a lot lighter than his Explosives.

It's been two years since I've been on skis. My COVID sedentary lifestyle has taken its toll. I weigh the same amount, but my stomach is now carrying the weight instead of my thighs. Time to get back on the bike and start climbing mountains again!

I've only met a handful of you reprobates in real life, yet I consider you all friends.

Happy to meet up with you any time you are in Annapolis!

Beau, covid has not been good to my physique either. Stitches come out of the knee this afternoon, so I can start ramping up my activity to its prior inadequate level. I've dubbed sailing to Bermuda the Gulf Stream diet. The round trip next month should help the waistline.

That diet is no joke! By the time we got to Morehead City last month, I noticed a pair of shorts that were a little tight when we left PR 14 days before were loose. When I got home I got on the scale, I was down 9 lbs! After some wine and pizza, that's pretty much all back now

Charlie, if you'll stoop to coming over to the wrong side of the bay, I'd love to have you up to the "upper deck" at NYC for a drink, it's one of the best land-spots in Newport! Ping me at dorfman@est.org.

I have my own Scantlings IRL to report - I got to meet Tucky/Jesse for the first time yesterday afternoon, and check out SORN. SORN is a magnificent example of an F31, I envy Jesse's ability to keep up with the gelcoat maintenance - I have so much to learn!

Jesse, thanks for the couple of hours, it was a really nice chat and a lot of great food for thought on my impending upgrade decision.

I apologize for being so brain-fogged the whole time, too. I never did figure out why I was like that, but I did nod-off for a split second as I was approaching the Kennebunk rest area to charge, so it would seem it must have been sleep deprivation. I just can't account for any recent shortage of sleep to explain it. It does also help explain why I look like I've just been woken up though.

Avram, it was fun to meet you in the flesh and show you the boat. I've enjoyed everyone from this group and SA that I've met, and anytime someone gets to Maine, let me know.

You’re on! We had a Warrior Sailing dinner at NYC a few years back. Great spot.

I agree that it has been great meeting others on this site. If any of you end up in the Seattle area please let me know. I retired yesterday, so I have lots of time to meet up or go for a sail. I suspect more than a few of you could teach me how to get more performance from my boat!

As far as skiing goes, my last day on the slopes was at Targhee in Feb 2020. My local area is still discounting season's passes so that is an option.

Yeah, Steele I gotta say, you need to update your picture now. And if you still look like that, then scoot down to Hollywood, and get one of the makeup artists from Benjamin Button to make you look old enough that I don't feel like an idiot right now... ;)

That is an accurate picture of how he looks. He really IS too young to retire.
But he is anyway.

Thanks all. I am younger than most retirees, but that photo it a bit dated. I have some more grey now, but not all greay yet!
Leaving medicine was not an easy decision, I will truly miss taking care of patients. I will not miss managing insurance, drug formularies, and the endless hours spent typing data into compurterized medical records.

We are headed to southeast NH in 10 days and then over to Portland a few days later to visit a good friend in Ferry Village. Would love to pop in for a beverage with ya.

However, I have a suspicion we'll meet up somewhere farther down east later this year or next.

I think that would make 10 scantlingers IRL...and a couple via live speaking telephone, or whatever they call them these days....

Oh, and Steele, the guy I am visiting in Portland (also our "witness" to my bride and I being wed in Gretna Green, Scotland, 1984) we have an aphorism for the year 2020:

"I am so f*cking glad to be retired" -- I hope that rings true for you in 2021 !!!!

Hey Time - I gather this was meant for Jesse, but I'll add that if Newport is in range, consider visiting. However comma, I expect to be heading south from roughly the 10th-20th to visit a number of friends, including hopefully Andy/Slick470, Sarah, Ella and Layton. I have to look up how to spell Layton every time.

Thanks avramd!

We'll be gone by the 16th or 17th, I think, but if you are interested, I may be able to get you a ride on a Wednesday Night Racing multihull! (maybe a Corsair 28) -- I think that's the 16th? I have a calendar around here somewhere...

Oh, that's funny b/c our multihull races are Wed night too, so that's the night I'll be missing my own while I'm traveling :-)

How many do multis actually participate in yours? We only have three this year - one of our most active racers sold his boat & exited the trimaran space.

We usually have 4, or 5by mid-summer

A Corsair 27, Corsair 28 R, two Corsair 31 and a new Dragonfly 32. [edit]

Last week, one of the tris decided to stick their prod and windward ama into the cockpit of another racer (couldn't de-power on a port tack duck to a starboard tack monohull). By the grace of God, there were no serious injuries!

In any case, if you want to swing by, my homies on the 28R would love to meet ya! (assuming repairs are done in time). I believe we'll be on the road to Newer England by then, but maybe not! PM me if you are interested.

This is interesting timing b/c three weeks ago (on the 2nd) we ran the risk of doing the same thing. We had a spinnaker near-reach through the Shields fleet's upwind first leg. It was around 12kts, which is at the edge of how much wind I'm comfortable flying the spinnaker on a reach in. We had to dodge several of them, it was a legitimately harrowing threading of the needle. At one point I had to bear away between two upwind Shields, and then heat up to a hard beam reach to cross a third - burying the ama - all just a couple boat lengths apart. We were windward and port, they were all leeward and starboard.

The other tri did not fly his kite through them. We may well have won the race because of this, but we will never know - because it turned out nobody wanted us to do this. Newport has a bit pre-designated race course chart, and it turns out both our navigators made the same mistake, and we sailed the wrong course! There are three sets or courses, and we read our course off the same wrong chart - we both got a DNF!

Hah! That's a great story. I know the Shields usually race up closer to the bridge. I bet John Horton was on one of them, probably using some strong language when you nutters in three-hulled boats blasted through their fleet!

I've had my 2nd (and third) Scantlings IRL meet-up!

Thank you Joel & Sue for reaching out, it was a pleasure to meet you in person!

I'm envious of (and intimidated by) the extent of your experiences and capabilities! I feel so small with my little coastal cruiser, waiving my little flag saying "I sailed 64 miles over four days & I was never more than 4 miles from shore!" Although I can still be proud of the fact that I did it single-handed & solo, in a 22' boat that can capsize.

Next time, hope to get you both out on Empathy!

Having a bigger boat does not make us better sailors. It gives us the opportunity to screw up farther from home!

Your 22 is a lot more fun than our 40,000 pound beast. I hope we can sail on each other’s boats in the future.

Perhaps, but the ability to spend a month on your boat and go that far from shore has afforded you a lot more experience than I have yet!

Big shout-out to Steve Godwin (Panope) for sharing his anchoring knowledge with us yesterday in an hour-long phone call!

As I suspected, our anchoring misadventures were the result of user error which he quickly identified and gave us suggestions on corrective actions. Plus, we will be adding more chain for the Med.

Looking forward to meeting more of you!

Joel,

Were your misadventures shared here in another thread? Or if not, would you care to share the summaries & lessons learned?

Knock on wood (literally, just did), I've gotten a lot better & more comfortable with anchoring, and I owe quite a bit of that to Scantlings. I know have several success stories in which I was able to sleep quite soundly at anchor - and I know what questions to ask & what to look for as risk factors On the other hand, I had a rude awakening a few weeks ago. When I hauled a few weeks ago, I noticed that my trusty Spade A60 has seams that have opened up on both sides. This is the aluminum one that has a lead-filled tip. I'm unclear whether the aluminum has simply worn away to the point of exposing the cavity, or it has warped & separated due to stress. I should get photos & go post on the anchor thread. I've had it since 2016, and I bought it used.
