Attic finds

We're not looking to move, but we are clearing out unneeded possessions since a move sometime in the 5+ years seems likely.

One thing that came down from the attic is a SailRite kit for the sail of Phil Bolger's Elegant Punt and Teal designs. Dacron plus some miscellaneous other stuff for a 59 sq ft sail. If there are any amateur sailmakers, or would-be sailmakers, out there who like head start, let me know. Between this, and the Commodore 64 stuff, I have a lot to get rid of.

If anyone needs a totally blown out kevlar Solstad genoa that's delaminating and fits a 12.7 J x 38.0 I , lemme know.

Funny, I had to google the Evelyn 32-2 specs page and to my surprise, the picture on it is of MY DAMN BOAT! Good to see it, again...I really miss that thing. Total maintenance whore, but fun!

There was a box in the garage I didn't remember that, on investigation, contained a sail. I didn't even bother to figure out which boat it was from.

It would probably fit on my Olson. 12.3 J x 42 I. I don't need any more old (de)laminate sails though... Sarah wants me to get rid of the extra sails I have stored under the basement stairs... but they might be useful...

Also trying to divest our selves of extra stuff. Mostly kids stuff that they have outgrown or don't play with anymore. Amazing how much space that stuff takes up.

Kids art projects, Sue's family heirlooms, holiday lights etc. Most of her stuff has not been opened in the 8 years we have been here. When her kids have an estate sale, they will probably throw out most of it.

I have friends who are owners of large off-site storage lockers. They say it's a great business because folks just can't face going through the work of sorting stuff out. As a result, the owners just keep raising the rates and almost everyone just pays it. Crazy business. The only downside is that in some areas, bad guys use the lockers to drop dead bodies and after a while, they smell. This was the reason given to me for why there isn't any power in the lockers. We live in crazy times!

One of our covid era projects last year was to clean out the house. My wife comes from a long line of collectors and pack rats so it took some time. I thought we had done a good job but last week I decided to coat our storage room floor with garage epoxy paint and had to clean the whole space out. Wow what a lot of stuff. Anybody want 4 pairs of 20 year skis? How about a very heavy trunk that came back from Europe after WW2 with my father in law? Nobody can find the key, I am afraid to know what's in there.

I read that Swedes have something called death cleaning. You get rid of anything that nobody would want after your'e gone.

For the record, this is a garage find, not an attic find. I don't recall when or why or how it came into my possession. I guess, once upon a time, I though I might become a real sailor anchoring out in hurricanes.

That's a proper "Kellet", which I'm sure you know. We use them all the time to help hold the anchor rode down on marks and boats during races. This is especially useful as it has a nice slider to go around the rode and let the kellet be deployed and retrieved more easily. I used to have a laser that was so overweight I first named it "KELLET" and then donated it to the junior sailing program with a note painted on the deck: "Too heavy to race, but great fun to use."

Yup! I did the numbers and realized I could buy a trailer and outfit it as a traveling workshop and storage bin for MAYAN to serve the same purpose. The pay-back was 10 months and the trailer can always go meet the boat where she is.

When I get new sails I request disposal of the old ones. I hope they get recycled into those tote bags but who knows. They are always usable sails so maybe they sell them. But I know I'll never choose to use them over the new ones. If so I wouldn't be getting new ones.

We do our best getting rid of stuff but we have essentially infinite storage space in our barn loft. We have a lot of Adele's old kid clothes, and crappy furniture from Ann's grandparents. I'm going to try to donate my Peugeot U08 bicycle that I bought when I was 13 this spring.

When we bought our house it sat empty for three years because the owner didn't want to deal with her parents' stuff that was here. When she finally did she kept a letter from the George H. W. Bush White House that her father had framed and bunch of furniture that her parents had commissioned George Nakashima to build specifically for the house. It wasn't offered but it would have been a great $1m investment if it were. The furniture's worth more with the house and I'd be surprised if it's being used. Everything else was disposed of.

Old sails are a odd one for me, and I'm sure for others that race as well. Our boat came with 12 sails when we bought it and I've been slowly working through them. Using and wearing out the oldest before moving through to the next one. I'm down to 2 mains, 3 head sails, and 3 spins that are worth using, and I've bought one new headsail.

I still need to dispose (or sell?) 2 mains and 2 headsails. Of those, one of the mains could be repaired if someone really wanted to, the other is pretty much garbage, and the headsails are usable but old, so I probably will never use them again... but... if I were to have a new crew practice session where we are going out to do a bunch of tacks, I might, just so I don't wear out one of the good headsails... it could happen... sure it could...

I'm not much better at throwing out old line. Need to toss a bunch of old fenders too. Anyone need old Autohelm ST50 stuff? How about a Ray ST60 speed display? I think Rich has already spoken for the old furler parts, but I need to get them to him.

If I had a garage or a usable attic I'd really be in trouble.

I was just staring at the dishes I remember as a kid. Nice classic stoneware made in Finland. Company still exists, but this pattern was discontinued so long ago that it does not even appear in their list of discontinued patterns. Mismatched, scratched, chipped, etc. Have not used it since we moved downtown.

My x-wife was a pack-rat up until very recently. There were three generations of stuff in storage... sigh. My bio-logical daughter has been the same way up until the arrival of their first baby. Now, they are expecting their second, and this Christmas, she started asking me if I wanted some of her "stuff." My poor Admiral (who is a "use it this year or its gone" sort) just gave me the "long look" when my daughter asked. I said no, but I still got some old pictures and a few old books. That was ok. The trash bin could hold them.

At first, it was quite a shock, but now there's a quarterly run to the dump, and the trailer that's replacing the storage locker is suitable for hauling big stuff. I need to make another run soon.
