Bute Inlet Landslide and Alpine Tsunami

In November of 2020 there was a massive landslide in the mountains behind Bute Inlet. It is estimated that the volume of rock would fill BC Place (indoor domed stadium) 5 times. It fell into a glacial lake, which triggered a tsunami reaching 100 METRES that then tore down Elliot Creek until it reached the Southgate River, which in turn flows into Bute.

We now have a fabulously clear video of the destruction. The helicopter follows Elliot Creek (or, more exactly, what's left of it) all that way to the start of the rock fall and back again. Excellent graphics to help you keep track of where you are. You'll get a good idea of the volume of material scoured away in this cataclysmic event--it's right down to bedrock in places.

You'll be glad you were nowhere near when this happened.

Grab yourself a glass of wine and settle in.
