Newport dining recommendations?

Making a quick trip to RI for my high school reunion, and we have one day in Newport.

(the 12 meters are not intown that day, so guess we will sail on the Aquidneck)

Last year the Black Pearl was a disappointment and the place we went - The Pier? on Bowens Wharf is gone. We will do the Brick Market Cafe for lunch, but need a dinner recommendation.

(Sorry to bother those from out of the area)

Joel

Casual and non-touristy (well, as much as one can expect in NWPRT) is Griswold's Tavern -- it's on Bellevue over by the old Naval Academy building. It is the haunt of some of the ORR crowd.

Newport dining generally sucks, and I can't keep up with it--changing all the time and the established places I've found disappointing.

We usually keep the boat at 41N marina and the chef there has been good for the last five years or so. Not easy on the wallet though.

Just looked up Griswold's. Permanently closed after 34 years. Stoneacre was good when it was on Thames but I had a not-great experience last time I was there.

Cindy's in Portsmouth near the marina's is one of the best breakfast places I've ever been. Old school. Huge portions. Portuguese omelet, stuffed french toast.

The last meal I had at the Candy Store was the last meal I'll ever have at the Candy Store. Mediocre doesn't begin to describe it.

Had lunch at the Black Pearl. It was back to its old standard!

We had a GREAT breakfast at the "Corner Cafe" in Newport RI. It's a long walk from the waterfront, but an easy drive. Parking around there is terribly difficult, as it is almost everywhere in Newport. We found it by using the age-old technique of driving around to look at the places listed on the web and chose the one with a mob standing outside trying to get in. This technique has served us well in town after town.

Woof...Joel, I am so sorry I was out of touch when you sent this - I'd have been happy to give rec's and would have loved to come meet you for a drink/bite.

I started to write up some notes here, and decided to post it as it's on first-class post instead of a months-too-late response to a request. Keep an eye out for "Scantlinger's Guide to Newport," coming soon to a forum near you.

For future reference, anybody coming to Newport, with any questions or any needs...

Please text me at 401-225-4545!

I mostly take from this forum since basically everyone here has more experience and knowledge in relevant matters than me, so if anyone will be in Newport, and having a local would help you in any way, then you have a local. I'm 10 blocks from the main public dinghy landing and Newport Yacht Club. I work from home, so there's a lot I can do to support people without it putting me out much.
