Whoa, not good! Hope it isn't too serious.

I blame the weather. I cranked up my shoulder a couple of weeks ago and had some serious massage and laser therapy on it. It should be better in a year or two.

What is this? An epidemic? I was getting into my truck to go down to the boat 2 weeks ago and heard and felt a slight pop in my shoulder followed by pain. Move my arm in certain directions like over my head and it hurts. It started to feel better for a while but is now getting worse again. Making a Dr. Appointment Monday.

Guys,

Definitely get some bodywork done on the shoulder by a massage therapist. And then set about building the muscle around the shoulder.

Be wary of surgery. The recovery is long and painful, and the end result is not typically a return to full function.

I've got a bum shoulder and when I talked to my buddy Steve the surgeon he said:

If you have surgery, you'll do 6 months of Physical Therapy afterwards to get you back to mostly functional. If you just do 6 months of Physical Therapy you might not ever need the surgery. You have nothing to loose by doing the Physical Therapy, you can always do the surgery if it doesn't work and then do yet another 6 months of Physical Therapy. Your choice.

Steve was right, I did the 6 months and didn't ever need the surgery. That was 20 years ago. I was 41. Now, I'm 61 and the shoulder is hurting again. Why, because I stopped doing the exercises my Physical Therapist gave me. When I quite I hurt. Of course, being a "guy" I'm too stoooopid to learn this and have to re-learn it (sort of) about once ever three or four years. Ah well. Being a "guy" is difficult at times - it's hard to be this stooooopid.

I was working over my head on a ladder with loppers and the like ... of course it was uncomfortable--I expected that--so I kept on going. Apparently 'taking a break' is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of intelligence. Too bad I don't have enough!

Lots of 'I told you so's' from my wife, who almost practiced herself out of a career at one point...

Tigger I messed up my right arm about 5 years ago while laying on my back reaching backwards behind my head and fiberglassing a patch on the underside of my cockpit sole. The whole right arm went numb with pain and my solution albeit stupid was to just take Tylenol. Well that was short term thinking and the pain would not go away. I climb a Jacobs ladder to get aboard ships and that arm was now becoming a liability. Pam swears by her chiropractor and I always had suspicions about the benefits. Well not anymore. I went to 4 sessions to restore my right arm and the muscles that control. All good now. I also learned I am no longer fit to be doing that type of repair in a tight environment. Getting older has its down side. ;)

Getting old seems to be an accumulation of rules, rituals, and exercises. In my case, it's all stuff I should have been doing before the parts went bad, but far better late than never.

There are, thankfully, no tears to the tendons supporting the rotator cuff. So I may yet be able to raise the sails myself.

There is, however, a thickening of the subacromial/subdeltoid bursa, and calcification of the lateral supraspinatus tendon (5mm). Off to physio I go.

Auto-correct apparently has 'issues' with this post! :D

Hi Beau. I would say most assuredly YES. No surgery, no medication, just a wee program of exercise supervised by a guy who used to play Aussie Rules.

Feels noticeably better--I just have to make sure that I don't do too much too soon.

Cheers

Thought I'd post something directly related to the thread title - for your consideration, as they say. :o

Wow. Well-played Sloop! I especially like the order of the photos in the ad (at least how they showed up on my screen just now). Its not until the very last (bottom) one that I realized why you posted this in this thread. Looks like skillful carpentry but, oh the horror of the full exterior view.
