The whining skirl of the pipes had struck dread into the Germans on the Somme, who had called the kilted pipers “Ladies from Hell”

During the Battle of the Bulge a pinned down Scots detachment sent an urgent request to headquarters: "Please send a Tank or a Piper"; they got the piper and then proceeded to breakout of their position and overrun the Germans.

Several Pipers armed with only their set of Pipes have been awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in battle.

Love them or hate them the Pipes do bring out emotions in people.

I plan to have a Piper present for the launch of the Francis Lee.

My plan when we have the Spike sail in at the shack is when I get tired of having everybody around I'm going to start playing bagpipe music ( on vinyl) until everyone leaves. Everyone except Kim. He'll be in Highland Heaven.
You'de be surprised how many used bagpipe records are available.

I for one have always loved the sound of bagpipes. In fact, it wasn't until I was in my 20s that I discovered most people can't stand them :)

When I was in college I remember one really late night walking back from the library and out on the quad was a guy dressed in full regalia marching up and down playing the pipes. I was mesmerized.

When I was 10 years old my dear old Dad took me to a football pitch up at Katoomba in the blue Mountains outside of Sydney. The Black Watch band was playing. It changed my life.

Our first house was on a wide boulevard park (Grand Boulevard in N. Van for you locals). Frequently on weekend mornings a lone piper would play in the park - it was great to hear. Then we moved to our current house and the first weekend here we found that a neighbour played the pipes on weekend mornings on her deck overlooking the water.

What are the chances?

I love the pipes outdoors but they should be banned indoors. :)

Although not directly related to Piping, there is a famous story about a troop transport (the-Birkenhead-disaster) hitting a rock during the Boer War and the commander of the Black Watch Troops aboard knew that in order to get the women and children off safely he needed to control his troops so they would not rush to the life boats so he ordered them to attention. The Black Watch soldiers stood at rigid attention as the vessel sank. The women and children were saved.

The Kaiser of Germany was so impressed with the discipline shown by the Black Watch he had the account read to each and every one of his army units.

The Pipes should always be played in the open air.....

On one of our race there/spend the night/race back in the morning deals last year a guy brought his bagpipes. It's amazing at how effective they were at getting folks up and moving after what may or may not have been a late night of imbibing.

I am told Queen Elizabeth is awakened every morning at 9AM by a Piper who pipes outside of her bedroom window. Way classier than an alarm clock.
