Tim, do you sail on ACE? I just saw a model of her at StFYC and she has this rather odd forward spreader to a bow stay. I can only assume it's for mast bend control. Any idea??

Beau, I have raced against Ace on Lady Van, however I did help move Ace's lead pigs to change her measured trim before she measured in for the Alexandra Cup. There's lots of lead in there !!! Lin sailed on Ace a couple of times .... the traitor !! :D

The current rig has twin jumpers up top and yes they're for the top mast bend control, both fore/aft and sideways.
Here's a closeup pic I took at our match race in Port Townsend a couple of years ago.
Ace Rig - diamonds-jumper struts.jpg

Lady Van has an additional strut pointing directly forward between the two diagonal jumpers, bisecting the angle between them. There's a small stay attached between the tips of the jumpers. The strut is attached between the mast and the small stay and it helps stabilize the jumpers.
Ace, Aloha and Lady Van all have jumpers, but Lady Van has the additional forward strut.

Beau, further to the post, here's a pic I took of Pirate which has an older R Boat rig design. It has in-line diamonds plus the forward strut. Perhaps the St FYC model shows this older rig design ?

Tim, the next time I'm at the club I'll take a picture of the model of ACE. She has a LOT of curve in the mast and this weird forward spreader/strut that goes from the hounds to an adjustable line that runs from the masthead to the tip of the bow. It is large - at least 5' long. You'll see.

It's easy to find - it's right above the free food in the Grill Room bar.

wait. What just happened.

Easy now, I have a short attention span.

Which for some reason seems to get queued up on the interwebs.
