Taking a break from some incredible September sailing before heading to a Crab Feast.... I love the Fall !!!!!

For whatever reason, "Angel From Montgomery" always chokes me up...... love the version by Bonnie Raitt with John Prine. I'm a huge admirer of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks; what an incredible family... then add Grace Potter, a flute and a segue into a great Dead tune puts this arrangement completely over the top:

I have some fond memories of sailing alone with this song blasting.

Otherwise, the entire Beck Sea Change album is a good one for some mellow, background music.

Sadly, my wife doesn't like to have music on board. Never really understood people like that.

I could post a thousand songs (I love music). One song I love that many people haven't heard is "In My Own Dream" by the Paul Butterfield Band on the album of the same name. No harmonica, but a wonderful sax solo from David Sanborn.

I miss Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield.

Mmmmmm, love the bluesy tunes. I remember waking up after being off watch to the smooth, sultry bluesy sound of Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters. It was the perfect volume and suited the rolling waves and warm climes while offshore. Wonderful musicians. http://youtu.be/LaYiXjQNcA4

Something played low and easy while at anchor or while underway.... very nice. Music that will complement and not compete with sound of the bow wash, the caress of waves against the hull and the ease of sheets on winches. Not a fan of any music played before or during a race. Too distracting and annoying. Certainly not a fan of tunes cranked up to be heard over an engine while underway. But good tunes playing softly at anchor and while under-sail can be be lovely. I am just as happy for long periods of time with no tunes and listening to the music of the ocean, the wind and the boat playing in both.

Good thread idea. I look forward to exploring music I have not listened to before.

Yes, one of my favorites. The tune I played for you was "Round Midnight", off Ronnie's "Colour of Love" CD. I can't find it on YouTube, but it's a great version of a great Thelonious Monk song.

One of my fondest sailing memories is of one evening as we were approaching Hawaii in the 2008 Pacific Cup. I had the cockpit speakers plugged in (and the cabin speakers turned off), and was playing a jazz/funk mix that a keyboard player whom I often jammed with had given me. We were flying the spinnaker in the moonlight, with decent breeze and gentle swells, comfortable in the warm tropical air, and listening to all this great keyboard-oriented jazz. We ended up with a full cockpit as nobody wanted to go below after their watch -- it was just too glorious.

Spartacus by Khatchaturian fits a scene of leaving a peaceful anchorage at dawn and heading offshore. The crescendo in the piece is like getting to open ocean.

I have been playing one cd over and over lately. Its called RES-OLUTION by Peter Frothingham. You'd have to buy it on the internet by going to Pete's site. You would not be sorry.
Basically it is a set of songs based on life growing up on the Tulalip Reservation where I now live. The song writing is excellent and the lyrics are amazing. Pete is the real deal. It is a very well produced cd. Great sound.

I had the ultimate pleasure of playing bass with Pete a few weeks back. He showed up at a music party down the beach. I had never met him before but he was a local hero to the other guys at the party. I was knocked out by everything he did. And to make it even better, he loved my bass playing and has suggested we play more together. This will probably be my last chance to really show what I can do with the bass. I need someone really good to back up and I think Pete is the guy.

It may happen at Pete's wife's restaurant in Arlington. Not an easy drive for most of you.

I highly recommend this cd.

It's amazing how much better I sound when I'm playing with good musicians. I sometimes play with some old friends who are barely mediocre on their instruments. I start out playing one way, but by the end of the set I have simplified, simplified, simplified, ultimately playing mostly whole-note roots. That's what they need. That's what the drummer needs. I concentrate on playing the best roots that I can. We have fun, but my playing is hardly exciting or even interesting. Just trying to do my job.

When I play with musicians who are better then me, it's a whole different world. I love it.

here's one that perplexes me.

As I creep up in age on you geezers, I find myself drawn to some bizarre tastes in music. Dubstep, House, Trance, Ambient, Electronica... whatever you want to call it. I've always been drawn to electronic music and these genres seem to be a somewhat natural progression in the Modern Age.

When I'm alone on the boat, I'll crank up some Dubstep and just bask in the waves of sound.

Anyone else go down that rabbit hole?

Well I don't know if it is the same but I find myself listening to "Spa" on the sat radio XM quite a lot now.

Spa is good. That's what we call 'Down Tempo', 'Chill', or in some cases 'Trip Hop'. It's good for Sunday Morning background music. I went through a phase where I was really into New Age music. Back when synthesizers were synthesizers and not samplers. You had guys like Kitaro, Vangelis, JMJ, Tangerine Dream, Steve Roach, Philip Glass, etc, etc. Their stuff was really unique and innovative. Nowadays it's approaching muzak. They still manage to squeeze in some good ones here and there though. If you want to find more old-school electronic stuff, look for electronica or ambient stations.

I have both albums on vinyl. EYE IN THE SKY comes from a very poignant time in my life. It recalls a flood of memories whenever I play it.

Oh my! Now that goes WAY back.
My only public performance - on stage at the Leather Bottle in Little Rock, Arkansas - we played some John Prine.
Angel from Montgomery went over ok, but when we finished Gordon and Lydia, they asked us to leave and not
come back. No sense of humor, I guess.
