Rick, that's crazy. The driver made no attempt at all to turn?? Just lit up the brakes and slid in. I'm wondering if the throttle stuck open....

the guy was experienced (with a lot of experience on this course) so there's a lot of questions about what happened. Open throttle is one hypothesis. From that angle it's hard to tell how fast he was going until the thing goes flying through the air.

One of the comments claims that the steering locked up and he couldn't turn and didn't know it until he needed it.
I know the one thing I have noticed with inexperienced drivers is once the lock them up, it seems they freeze. My son waited too long to brake on an AX course when I was riding along and got the fronts locked up (set track) but he did turn the wheel. Once I convinced him to get off the brakes, he was amazed that the car then turned in just fine. SUpposedly this driver was both expereinced in the car and on this course but that's one hell of a crash.

I couldn't get the linked site here at work. It looked like there were 2 people in the car from what I could see. Whas the race a rally stage? Or was it a RHD car? Did the person or people in the car survive?

Driver and navigator. I am not familiar with this race, but it was a rally. Both guys walked away, no thanks to any of the witnesses who were happy to record the whole thing.

Fixed it for you.
Yeah, those guys watching seemed totally unconcerned.

Ouch - sad to see a toy get broken like that. Glad the folks walked away.

Having been interested in most forms of auto racing since the late 50's, it is amazing to me to see what drivers survive now. There was a great ad on TV a few years ago with Don Garlits (drag racer) proclaiming he had been "upside down, backwards and on fire, faster than most people have ever gone". It was true - his fueler "blew over" at over 300 mph and burst into flames while it disintegrated around him - he walked away. I watched the same thing happen to Kenny Bernstein. When they got him out of the car and in front of a camera he said he "got his bell rung pretty good" but was unhurt.
Formula One drivers used to attend several funerals a year, every year. It was like being a test pilot in the early 50's. Now there are seldom more than 1 or 2 people killed per year in ALL of motorsport.
Amazing progress.

I took a Skip Barber course where they talked about using 100% of the tire grip- you could use it all braking or all turning or a combination but you couldn't turn while 100% braking. Make us do a brake turn exercise to prove it.
Cruising related- they do a rally in Newfoundland each year. There is water there too.

Jesse, As an X-Turbo Porshe owner, I recognize what happened there! A couple of times during the Silver Spur Run things got pretty weird!

Son’s these shifter karts have some serious speed attached to them. The wild part is your head is the roll bar. Safety aspects haven’t caught up to the speed potential these little demons put out. Nasty looking accidents.
