yeah, after my wife disturbed a normal yellowjacket nest yesterday and was stung between 10-20 times, I don't think we'll be visiting anyplace that has those anytime soon.

and yellowjackets are much smaller.

It doesn't help when you move a peice of wood that happens to rip open the nest in the process either. Not a happy camper yesterday.

On the "plus" side (if you can call it that) we learned that WD40 relieves the stinging better than a lot of other things.

Those things look like props from one of those 50's sci-fi "post nuclear" movies. There was a bit on the news about them the other day showing what they did to some poor sod - big chunks of flesh missing - looked like he'd been chewed by rats.

That is one critter I can see eradicating.

Yeah, we have a slightly, slightly smaller version in Taiwan called Tiger Head Wasps. When you see the nest, you call the fire dept immediately as they are very aggressive - they go looking for trouble. Sometimes you run into them hiking in the mountains.

Other days I find a russell's viper in my sailbag.

I'm not terrified of anything, but economy size hymenoptera is it.

We fought horseflies most of the summer, those things are incredibly durable. My wife (bless her heart) used to hold the zapper racquet down on them while they twitched and burned, and two minutes later, they were chewing on your arm. I would hate to see any variety of those over even little finger size.

the problem with horseflies is that they are FAST and damn persistent. They rank pretty high on the 'scream like a little girl' scale. Right up there with those hymen things OM mentioned.
