The proper attitude for a sailor is a state of morbid vigilance bordering on paranoia.

Still looking for the attribution for that one, but words to live by.

Today, I'd guess that was a PhotoShop Job. Then, I'd guess that some drunken skipper wanted to make port in record time. What in the WORLD were they thinking??

I especially like the guys standing on shore: "The crew paused for a photo with their ship prior to walking down the road to the local pub."

We called that the "thicker laminate rule". A related rule is the better paint job rule. The boat with the better paint gives way.

One of my faves, reputedly from Paul Elvstrom. "You haven't won the race, if in winning the race you have lost the respect of your competitors."

Lin, that is certainly Paul Elvstrom, and it's one of the best quotes ever. Sadly, few of our modern racers understand what the heck he was talking about. BV

I never saw a wreck and never have been wrecked, nor was I ever in any predicament that threatened to end in disaster.

In addition to being a sailor, my father was a minister in his later years.... my mother needle-pointed him a saying:

Lord, give us this day
Our daily breeze.

No idea where the saying came from.... obviously I fell far from the tree
