SWMBO and I will be in Annapolis in the next day or so. Completely unexpected visit. Where to stay? (B&B, Boutique Hotels? Etc) where to eat? (we are not fans of chain eateries.)
Any other suggestions of what to see?
I think I remember that some of you are in that area.
Thanks,
Kim

Unfortunately, I can't get out there during the week. I don't know where to stay, but there are several places in great locations near the harbor, Academy, etc.
The local standard for food is not very high and you will not get a superior meal anywhere, but you will not have to eat at any chains. The Boatyard in Eastport has a good bar, decent food, and lots of racing and boating stuff on the walls. It is, however, deafeningly loud. If you want to go where the "real" sailors go, there is the much smaller and darker Davis Pub, also in Eastport. There you will also find a good bar, fewer tourists and real estate agents, and edible food. Up a rung or two is Carrol's Creek, which has a nice view of Spa Creek from the Eastport side and pretty good food. Over on the North side of the Severn, the Severn Inn has lots of waterside seating with a perfect view of the harbor, a superior bar, and a decent appetizer menu--the entrees are so so. Avoid the Chart House at all costs, as well as anything near the town dock and adjacent traffic circle. The only other restaurant I can tell you about is a place called "Level" which does small dishes and emphasizes local foods. It's a little pretentious and stylish for my taste, but it's fun, the bar has many boutique cocktails, and the food is good. A good rule of thumb, in Annapolis as anywhere, is to avoid anyplace calling itself a "seafood" restaurant.
Don't hesitate to PM me with any questions and let me know if you're hanging around on Fri pm.

Have a great time; it's a fun town. I'm interested in what others, such as Irie, say and let us know if you find anything good or amusingly horrible.
Also, the restaurant in the Westin is supposed to be alright. I think we had a decent lunch there once.

Don't remember the name but a good sushi place on the left headed up west street. My mom is in town ( and just spent a week as a guest at the local hospital) so I'm stuck at home but would happily have you here for a drink and a meal is you happen to get out of the yuppie village Annapolis has become.

We had a good lunch from the sandwich place in the market on the dock.
Gotta say, yuppies or not, Annapolis is our favourite town in the US so far.

I am weak on the social taxonomy of generations X and beyond. Yuppies were professionals by definition and I may have been one. I'm not at all sure these people do anything so easily definable.

We have not been to Annapolis in years, so when Susan said: "I have never been to Kentucky or Tennessee, please take me there" I did not realize that she would start adding on side trips.
First side trip was to see the Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece Falling Water in SW PA. Then as we leave that house this morning we look up Green Bank, WV to see the world's largest land based movable object the 100 meter fully steerable radio telescope (we are into such things), but then we discover it is only opened Thur-Mon.
So Susan says: "Please take me to Annapolis to kill time until Thursday."
Who knows what she will dream up next, but it is always good when she does.
Life with Susan is never boring!
Larry, where do you live? We don't want to trouble you for the meal, but maybe a chat about boats is on order (depended on Susan's scheduling.)

I just miss having a chandlery at the docks, Rookies Market and real shops on West Street rather than the over priced specialty stores. Slipping out of USNA as a senior for a beer and a game of darts on the Rathskeller made me feel almost human on occasion.
Kim
I'm about an hour and 15 minutes south in California, Md, which is next to Hollywood Md. Yes, you always have to explain it carefully when making an order over the phone.
What days will you be there? We have a few scantlingers in the area and might want to gather for a drink and a gam one evening. HB and I are south. Rich is very slightly south, etc. I could probably slip away for an evening.

We are in Annapolis today and then leave early tomorrow morning (Weds) to drive to Green Bank, spend the night there and see big radio telescope first thing Thursday morning.
Doesn't look like we are going to make a meet this trip. Susan is in charge of the schedule as this is her trip (yes, she wants to see the radio telescope!)
As Beau says, I am a very lucky guy as Susan is interested in lots of things that also interest me. I love all of her wild detours and tangents.
This is what happens when you marry the smartest gal you can find.

On main street, heading up from the water is a decent place to grab a sandwich or greasy breakfast, Chick and Ruth's Delly. Up a bit further is Nano Sushi Bar which is pretty good as well.
Here is a decent list of what is downtown as far as eats
http://www.downtownannapolis.org/_pages/restaurants/_intro_restaurants.htmThat said, I almost always end up at either the boathouse or Davis' Pub.
Give us some additional notice next time and we can pull together a group us near by scantlingers. We're about an hour away on the other side of DC in VA, but sail out of a marina about 20 minutes south (by car) of Annapolis.

Some great ideas above... hopefully you were able to catch the Blue Angels show today !
A new restaurant which my wife really enjoyed is Blackwall Hitch (named after the knot), so it's definitely recommended (though I have yet to visit). Right over the Spa Creek bridge from downtown.
http://theblackwallhitch.com/Definitely do a meet-up next time you (or any other Scantlingers) are in town !
If you are looking for a great place to relax and view the scenic Chesapeake, Eastport Yacht Club is reciprocal with just about all clubs. The drinks are strong and the prices reasonable. Not a bad walk, or you can take the water taxi over for a few bucks.

Enjoy !

EYC has, unquestionably, the best bar in town, in fact I should join a yacht club just to reciprocate with it.
Blackwall Hitch is the new "Cougarfish", right?

Just join EYC... if you can fog up a set of eyeglasses, they'll let ya in
Blackwall is the old Cougarfish, just gone upscale... Jan is a picky eater, but her and a friend both enjoyed it immensely. Get in before it's corrupted

We had a great time!
We decided to do a quick tour of the Naval Academy and ended up spending just about the entire day there. Their museum is first rate, best collection of ship models I have ever seen (I love ship models).
Visited John Paul Jones Crypt under the Chapel.
Visited the sailing harbor (with the Blue Angels over head every few minutes).
Talked with Midshipmen, talked with the navy guards, chatted with a guy on the docks about water depths in the area.
Now we have this super positive view of Annapolis. We just bypassed the tourist junk and enjoyed the great brick buildings and the NA.
Did visit the State House on the way back to the parking garage.
I could live here. (But the water is a bit thin for the Francis Lee.)
Great day on another of the Susan side trips!
Next time we will make it more of a stay and less of a flash visit so we can check some of you characters out. Or come to Seattle and visit Bob and us sometime.....like next Sat for the Spike Sail By.
Cheers,
Kim

YES ! maybe not this Saturday, but I'll pack up Ajax and fly out for a charter...the missus is a flight attendant so this may have legs. Gotta be some sort of "rent-a-wrecks" for cheap in the area ? Maybe Gate can send over a certain waterlogged C&C 30

Glad you had a great time.... I keep pondering moving since there are quite a few taxable/financial pitfalls in this state, but the ambiance keeps us here. Having an impromptu dinner with friends at EYC tonight if you want to come down. Just ask the barkeep where Kirk is... after they roll their eyes and check under the barstools, they should find me somewhere in the dining room.

Yes, you have to plan ahead next trip. We'd live to meet you in the flesh. As Eric will tell you, my son believes there is a difference between friends and "Internet friends".
Glad you enjoyed my alma mater. Lots of mostly good memories there and they take the task of molding smart young men and women into leaders very seriously. You are correct. The museum is a great asset and a special place to take a deep dive into the great sailing ships of the line. JPJs crypt is a bit overdone but we all need our touchstones. I actually find his history a bit fascinating.
As to our thin water, we sit in the alluvial plain of ancient Susquehanna river valley and it colors our lives here. Older and slower than the Salish Sea, it has seen much and drains (and suffers the burdens) of a significant land area and the urban pollutants of a dense (in a lot of ways) region. I've travelled the world and literally sailed the seven seas but the Chesapeake truly runs in my veins. Come see us again when you have time to meet up.

Thanks Kirk, but we are pretty well trashed after enjoying Larry's alma mater. Next time we are here let's do it.
Larry, pretty darn impressive school you have there. I spend some time talking to a very proud father of a 2014 graduate ( well, he will be a graduate later this week.)
Great day for us in Annapolis and at NA.
