Dang, that looks interesting Olaf...but there's a pay wall for me.

BLOODBORNE: we are having a home debate about blood borne transmission of SARS-CoV-2. I've done a lit-search, but there isn't much, at least to my lay perspective. Last I saw was Feb 25, 2020, saying evidence indicates it is not a blood-bornorne pathogen.

Any takers on this one?

This is a bit too tin-foil hat for me. A lot of her allegations and her work have been discredited and her publications retracted. I've worked with hundreds of researchers in my career and found them to be honest, dedicated scientists. Her conspiracy theories are dangerous and she's been part of the anti-vaccine voice for a decade. Which has absolutely zero empirical basis in epidemiology. The video leaves out some important info about her, especially the retractions, which are humiliating, sometimes career-endangering episodes for Principle Investigators. I would not promote this video, but hey, it's a free country!

(I hope I wasn't too harsh) would love to hear what Benno has to say about her.

Benno has an acute case of wacko fatigue. Virtually every high-visibility medical researcher has been named by someone a modern Mengele, a greedy creature of Big Pharma, or the Devil incarnate. If I were any good, I'd have people saying outrageous shit about me too.

The antivax movement is a magnet for scientific sociopaths and grifters, of which Dr. Mikovits is both, and its ambit has now encompassed the COVID-19 pandemic.

For David Gorski's angry dissection of the video, see https://respectfulinsolence.com/2020/05/06/judy-mikovits-pandemic/.

Here is what worries me. We have had a low rate of infection here in our small rural county of 113K residents, particularly since we have a significant number of DOD related "essential" businesses that have stayed open while maximizing telework. We are also a majority "red" county in a very "Blue" state. While Gov Hogan has arguably done a very good job is dealing with the balance between shutting down and staying open. Nonetheless, we have a vocal group of very hard core that believe Hogan is a RINO who has sold them out, the state is out to take away their guns and have put together a petition suggesting that local decisions on shutdowns should be the norm because we are not like the urban counties with high rates.

Things were looking pretty good for a while and down to 1-2 new cases per day . Not sure if this is a testing artifact (easier and faster but still requires a medical order) or a real upswing but the last week has been pretty significant. we are running a 3.3% death rate at present (8) so we are not too far off the average fatality rate per confined case which makes me think the case ramp up is not a testing artifact.

Yes, the political purists who have slapped the RINO label on Hogan drive me nuts.

The legislature *is* out to take everyone's guns, but not Hogan. The guy is completely out-gunned in the legislature. They hold a veto-proof majority. What exactly, do they expect him to do? He hasn't sold anyone out. He's been one of the most balanced governors I've seen in ages.

Fun fact: Bell Helmets are made in Santa Cruz, CA. (Well, not actually "made" here. But it's a local company.)

Yup, we have quite an Empire going on! Amazing for such a small place ;)

Well, there are a lot of Bell helmets built in Illinois from parts made in the USA and China. But, most of them are from the Colony of China. Bell is the only helmet manufacture which anyone knows of who even attempts to build helmets in the US. Source

Had our weekly all-hands. Data for Floriduh hasn't even flattened yet, even accounting for extra-testing, and we think from looking at the EU countries it's about 2-weeks after flattening out that things begin to improve. Given the lack of social distancing anecdotally observed....it's going to be a while. One more week in lockdown.

Larry,

Around here we have a similar problem. The folks in Santa Cruz County locked down really early and hard. Most folks did a total lock-down around March 1-9. As a result, the case total is 141 to date, 2 dead, 51.5 cases per 100,000 folks. That's 10% of Miami-Dade and 2% of NY City. We don't see anyone without masks anyplace other than in their own cars or walking a long way away from folks.

Our problem is that we're basically a University (UCSC) town and a tourist town. We have been forced to close the beaches repeatedly because hordes of folks from out of town show up and pack the place. The locals are getting quite grumpy about that, as out of towners aren't popular generally due to congestion, and trash they leave behind.

The economic damage to our area has been massive. It's bad all over CA, but in a town where about 1/3 of the folks work supporting tourists, it's particularly bad. Oddly, we haven't seen any of the "Live Free Or Die" folks here to speak of. About 8 of them showed up in a popular protest location and were promptly surrounded and shouted down by over 100 masked vigilante types. We're long on self-righteousness around these parts.

It's clear that there isn't any "herd immunity" around here, there couldn't be with only under 5% of the population having had any sort of exposure.

Beau, I marvel at the fact that San Francisco has a total of 35 fatalities. 35.

My best male friend on the planet, a guy I've known since 8th grade, roommate during uncertain times back in the 70s and the Godfather to our firstborn was Director of Education for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, starting early 80s.

Originally involved with the northern California Shakti Project, which morphed into the SF AIDS entity (which was on the frontline of formulating public health policy around strategies for prevention) I asked him the other day if he felt any sort of pride in being a huge part of helping define a culture of caring compassion and personal responsibility to impact the spread of a dangerous virus.

Typical of Jackson, he said it was "just another episode in his wild ride through the reality sandwich of life."

Still, I'm totally amazed at how folks in and around SF have responded. I can't help but think that the present community response lies a tiny bit in the work that AIDS educators did 35 years ago in, at the very least, spreading the word through a populace that there was/is a deadly killer at large and that there are proven techniques of prevention.

I could be wrong. But something is at play here. It isn't just a stochastic phenomenon.

My county added its first new case in 2 or 3 weeks (a 90+ year old woman, sick, now our only hospitalized covid patient).

Our lock down has been half hearted from the get go. No public enforcement. At most, only about 1/2 the people (workers and customers) inside stores and businesses wear masks. A quick "profiling" by myself indicates that mask use follows political party for middle aged folks. Most elderly people wearing and most young people not wearing.

Today, was my first day back at work after more than 2 months. We've got three boats that we are rebuilding - each in a different building. My project has only myself and one other guy. For the most part, it will be easy to remain at least 10 feet away from my coworker.

That said, I think I will start work as early as 6 a.m. and work untill about 2 p.m. My coworker often starts around lunch time, thus minimal overlap (I'll miss working with him around. He is a great guy).

This time of year, we open up the big doors of the shops every day - so lots of fresh air.

I believe that all three of our clients have taken meaningful financial hits, but wish to follow through to completion.

Sue has been wearing an N95 at work.

She is allergic to it and the latex strap. She has switched to a different mask and is taking a round of steroids.

Her doc said that an allergic reaction to the mask is common.

That does not justify the lies posted on FB!
