Another point. To stop isolating isn't really a policy decision.

First, in my state the stay-at-home order is an "advisory." Technically it's our choice. Second, even if an order were lifted, would people just start believing that it's safe to congregate with other people? I wouldn't, and I imagine this is true of many others. Our contributions to the economy wouldn't come back until we feel safe.

It’s a corona virus. So doesn’t that mean it’s mutating fairly rapidly with all that that implies for herd immunity and potential vaccines?

At first, reports were that it was fairly stable, because it is so successful. Now, I'm reading articles stating that several mutations have been found. What the implications for this are, vis a vis a vaccine, I cannot say. That's where Olaf and others know far better than I.

Depends on what “fairly” means. A lot slower than influenza and there is realistic hope for both of those things.

I was wondering because the markers are changing quickly enough so that we know if you got the EU vs China strain. Influenzas require new vaccines each year, and often don’t include the most recent strains (what I remember from making biologic influenza vaccines) which is why sometimes people say they don’t work.

Right, but immunity is often relative and incomplete, which is why even off-target flu vaccines are effective in reducing the rate and severity of infection and.

I wish we had a real ID person here.

I'm not a doctor, nor any kind of life sciences guru, but what I read was that a lot of the mutations are on unused sections of DNA so they are a convenient label even though the essential character of the virus has not changed.

With waivers for "essential travel". I'm talking with a customer about 2 trips that are planning on making in the next few weeks.

One of my return crew for the Bermuda return is a Navy civilian. We planned to leave Bermuda on June 28. He can't travel unless the ban is modified. (If Bermuda allows us in)

We were dock mates for a while with the recently retired commander of USAMRIID at Ft. Detrick. He was a smart and entertaining guy who put his GI bill education benefit into diesel mech school and went cruising. He'd be perfect.

We're getting concerned that things will start lifting and my office will insist that I come back in. If that happens, Sarah will be stuck home with a full time job and two kids. With schools closed for the rest of the year and most if not all of the summer programs we were going to put them in cancelling, that will be an interesting and frustrating predicament.

Andy,

That bites! Sue works with a lot of single moms who have been juggling 12 hour shifts and unreliable daycare.

That does sound hard, Andy. Going to be tough for a lot of people with little kids. I hope Sarah's agency is forbearing about work. We tried to be.

Preaching to the choir here, I know, but in Canada more than a third of ICU patients admitted for Covid-19 are under the age of 60.

Sarah's agency has traditionally been pretty flexible, but Sarah has also been busier than normal and looks to be even busier once all the investigations into all this mess goes into high gear. She was just promoted another step up the rung, and we're not quite sure how that will actually affect her day to day, but they are already piling on new responsibilities.

My job has traditionally been flexible as long as deadlines are met and clients are kept happy. Occasional telework has been allowed, but long term has not. I'm not the only one in the office in the same situation, so hopefully the office will continue to be understanding, even after things relax. After an initial pause in projects, things seem to be picking back up again with a cautious eye on construction sites and their ability to stay open. In the meantime, I'm often not sure what day it is, and I think I zoned through a few weeks in early April. I'm surprised that we've already been home since March 13th.

We're just really not sure what will happen when the "all clear" is given, and nothing is really open for our kids to go to. Summers are always a bit of a hot mess with weekly day camps that change every week anyway and all of those are starting to cancel. The ones who don't are probably going to fill up very quick. Of course this all assumes that we feel comfortable to send our kids even if things are open. Layton's day care is debating opening back up in May, but we're not comfortable sending him back yet and were going to pull him out in June anyway for camps and family travel before he starts Kindergarten in the fall.

As far as drums, the kids have pulled out every musical instrument we have in the house (that they know how to find, thank sweet baby Jesus) and are throwing together impromptu jam sessions. This includes but not limited to, tambourines, guitars, maracas, slide whistles, recorders, and the like. Ear plugs are a must when that kicks off.

Time for my drum joke.

A group of cowboys are sitting around the campfire in the old west when the sound of drums starts up in the distance ...

DUM dum dum dum DUM dum dum dum etc.

Cowboy: "Ah don't like the sound of them drums."

Voice from the darkness: "Not regular drummer." :D

If it wasn't raining every damned day, the kids could take their jam session out into the backyard and it wouldn't be so stressful.

None of my business but I wouldn't send my kids to any camp or day care this summer. Face it, state governments are going to relax business lock-downs too soon and we're going to have flare ups.
Florida has been HOT for weeks now and there's no indication that summer conditions are going to slow the rate of infection.

Your entire family is thin, young and fit. You've probably all had the virus and were asymptomatic.

I know you are joking there, but I doubt we've had it. While we do live in a relatively dense area of NOVA we're in the burbs, we have been watching this with some concern before there were any reported local cases. We started slowly filling the cabinets and freezer chest and upping cleaning and hand washing before it was cool. I'm also pretty good at social distancing normally. The kids are the social butterflies in this house.

So, maybe asymptomatic, maybe the symptoms match the common seasonal allergies, but my guess is we haven't had it yet. I hate needles, so not too keen on an antibody test either. Not saying that if and when I do get it, I wouldn't mind the asymptomatic route. Although I'd feel pretty shitty if I gave it to someone else and they got super sick or died.
