Scantlings is a phpBB bulletin board that was quickly put in place to provide a friendly addition to the myriad of sailing (and any kind of boating for that matter) communities that can be found on the web. Like the definition, this forum is made up of the structural parts (members) that make up the vessel (community). While many of the sailing forums that currently exist go to great lengths to provide specific categories to compartmentalize and focus discussions, Scantlings is intended to be much more general in nature. Like friends in a pub.

While Scantlings is in no way purporting to be 'exclusive', it is somewhat 'selective' in that knowledge of this forum is strictly by word of mouth. Therefore, the tone and direction of this community is determined by its members.
Below are the basic goals of this board:
- About Boats
While most of us have an overwhelming interest in sailboats, Scantlings is not a sailing forum strictly speaking. Though it's expected that sailing will be a large portion of the subject matter. - Simple
There are currently only two categories that deal with boats: Sailing and Other Boats. In the future it may be necessary to break this down further, but the goal should be to simply and freely discuss all aspects of boats. For non-boating topics, an Off Topic category is available. - Friendly
Again, Scantlings is not intended as an exclusive community. New members are welcome. A friendly disposition by all will help maintain that friendliness. And since the community is ultimately responsible for that friendliness, before you invite new members, consider whether he or she will help maintain that friendly atmosphere. - Civil
A common evolutionary feature of Online Communities is that over time and increased population, the atmosphere becomes less and less civil and more confrontational. It is up to the community here to maintain a civil tone. Beyond that, the board will be monitored and responsibly managed. We will determine which behaviors are not welcome and manage those as needed. It is hoped that administration of this community will not need to be full time job - Democratic
This is OUR board. Regarding the direction and personality of the community, WE are responsible.
At the moment, Scantlings is a small, low-key community established primarily to provide a good natured forum for discussing our common interest in sailing. Ideally, I think we'd all like to keep it that way. Our goal is not to replace other communities, but to supplement them.
