no recent pics, but daily driver is a 2007 Toyota Corolla LE. Good gas mileage and all around decent car. No frills, but it gets it done.

Toy/workhorse is a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 ZR2 extended cab pickup. With some weight in the bed, that truck is a blast on snow days. Plus it lets SWMBO go to the horse farm and get a truckload of horse shit for the garden.

It's cause you got the truck to take the sails, eats, adult beverage, and crew to the boat. She knew who to pick, cause she is a winner.

Okay Porsche fans. I know the 928 has a good following but that crowd sits on the bleachers because of that front engine placement. I believe the 914 had a pariah stance because it was made from old cigar boxes.Where is the old guard Porsche fan sitting on this one .
The Cayman.

The designer of this car is a Chinese fella Pinky Lai.

I think he designed a good looking car. Then again some people actually bought an AMC Pacer so what do I know. Chime in.

I prefer it to the Boxster. It's curious - I find that drop top Porsches seldom look good. They always seem to have a hump backed, afterthought look about them. The one exception is the Boxster, which was designed as a roadster but I found I still preferred the Cayman when it came out.

Porsche Design is a very inconsistent design operation. On the one hand they turn out some fabulous, timeless designs like the 928 and some of their industrial design like watches, on the other they regularly blow it big time - the Panamera being a prime example. What a beastly looking humpbacked thing! Kia and Hyundai make better looking cars.

Ed,

A friend of mine has one of those. He loves it. I've driven it far faster than I should have along a local road called Skyline Drive in the Santa Cruz mountains and can attest to the fact that it will simply outdrive my 996 Turbo by out stopping it and out cornering it. The Turbo could easily get it on the straights, but there is simply no way that my lovely old tail happy Turbo could have hung with this car on tight corners. I think this is actually the "future" of Porsche, as much as I hate to say it, it is simply a better car in almost every way (no back seat for kiddies) and sold for less money. Rumor has it that the engine output limits on the Cayman are set by Porsche to insure that the little beast doesn't embarrass the 911 on the Nuremberg Ring. They've failed on that front as RUF (the tuning shop) did a mild software re-load and absolutely creamed the 911 with GT2 sorts of times on the Ring.

These are great cars, and I think they've actually got the motor in the right place.

I think the Cayman is a throwback to the Porsches of the 60's and 70's. Simpler design and more about performance. The 911's have really moved into Touring Car territory with lots of refinement while the Cayman is more of a sports car.

Beau,

I figured you might have a deposit on the 918 Spyder by now.

Without DAUNTLESS in the mix, I'd sure be interested! I'm trying to focus on making a large heavy boat go slightly less slowly. Seems safer. :D

The styling of the Cayman, especially the first gen, is excellent IMO. I have not driven one yet but from what I have heard from friends and the press it is an exceptional car. I have read that the latest models, with electric steering, don't have the road feel of the older models.

I agree with you guys, the Cayman is the real Porsche. But there is tradition, and as long as there is a back seat my daughter can fit in and they're willing to put the motor in back and it still looks like the car I drooled over as a kid I'll keep buying 911s. The latest, the "991" version, is the first automatic transmission car I've ever owned. Technically, the double-clutched PDK.

I'm just going to write that it's an awesome car. 50 years of trying to achieve perfection has gotten those car guys closer and closer.

Keith

I could not agree more. The 911 is an awesome car but the current versions are a far cry from the late 60's 2.0 liter 911 T, E and S variants I fell in love with. Mine did have air conditioning beyond opening the windows at speed and I think the radio had a single speaker.

Larry, no question. The modern cabins are quiet. When the transmission downshifts there's a port to the inside that opens to let you hear the engine. The stereo system is well designed.

The new cars are not old cars. No complaints, though.

You've put it in a nutshell. A friend of mine has a Boxster and we and two friends took it and my C5 Corvette on a "Boys Road Trip" to Speed Week at Bonneville a couple of years ago. We all agreed that the Boxster was a sport car and the Corvette was a GT. On narrow windy roads the Boxster was simply superb. On faster or more open roads the Corvette had the legs and was a better ride. For a long trip like that, the Corvette was much more satisfactory,as, I suspect, the new "911" would be.

The 911 successors are competitors to the Corvette, the Boxster is a quite different experience and much more in the vein of the original air cooled 911's.

I owned a first-year 911S. I don't think I could drive it to work today, my back couldn't take it. It was great fun, I was a lot younger, that was then and this is now. I loved my 996 Turbo, soft quiet and smooth.

I've driven recent 911's (took a spin in a Turbo earlier today) and a Cayman S, I'll take the Cayman every time, it's just plain fun to drive, handles beautifully. My favorite Porsche. I also LOVE the looks. Seriously thought about one recently, decided to go practical with a 4 door AWD Acura for skiing and spend the balance on the boat.

The Porsches seem better put together than BMW's. My last BMW gave us an addendum to the family code of life: Never own a German car out of warranty.

All my friends with Porsches seem happy, though.

Beau:
Thanks. I think so.
She grabs my finger and pulls me out of my chair and drags me over to where I keep my candy stash. She points up to the counter. Mom and Dad say, "Don't give her any more treats."
Are you fucking kidding me? Do you think I would deny Violet anything?
But,,,,I knuckle under and have to endure the look of dissapointment. Bad Grampy.

Did you guys see that the star of "Fast and Furious" was the passenger in a Porsche Carrera GT and died when the driver wrapped the $250,000 car around a tree. That car is a LOT to handle and probably shouldn't be sold to "normal" people.

From the pics of the remains, they must have been doing triple digits. Experienced racers should have known better.

I picked up a nice basic longbow this weekend. Ever since reading a book by Saxton Temple Pope written in the 1920's I wanted to try a longbow. When I saw a used one in nice shape I made it mine.

I need to man up a bit to hold a draw with it but a dang good fun. 68" and around 65# at my draw.

Cheaper than cars!

Mistakes happen, even to great drivers from F1. They happen even more often on public roads where you can never tell when a kid or a granny is going to step out in front of you. After a number of years of twice a year trips from San Francisco to Jackson Hole for summer hiking and winter skiing I concluded that while the Turbo could easily continue to make the trip at well over 100 mph average speed, I would eventually kill myself by accident. Picking a jack rabbit out of the intercooler grill work helped to focus my mind on the real risks involved even in the empty Nevada desert.

Our local "race track" road (Route 35 aka: Skyline Drive) winds along the top of the Santa Cruz mountains and is a joy to drive fast. We loose about a dozen folks a year up there, the vast majority of them single-car accidents.

Without the safety equipment, railings of a race track, and fences to keep people an animals away .... bad stuff can happen quickly.

Really sorry to read about this - I enjoyed the acting in Fast-n-Furious. I have to admit I enjoyed the cars and women more.
