Well, thanks all, first off, for the CV help, second off, for the support. Much appreciated.

I'm not the type of person that handles stress well, and I'm feeling a tad stressed at the moment.

The Sawmill that I've been working at for the last 13ish years has gone to pot, lot's of good friends getting their CV's together. I basicly applied for job there, change from being a contracting sparky, better money... feel like I've dodged a bullet here. Not enjoying seeing friends jobs get messed with so much.
I've had to hand my notice in, Been employed by this firm for the last 11 or so years, Had to, Needed to use my current employer as a referee.
My current boss was real good about this, he is happy that I'm going on to do something else, he said that he wouldn't be happy if I'd gone to work for the competition and gave me a real good reference. Because of the way dates fall and the fact that I had next week booked as leave (last week of the school holidays) and I've been doing 4:30 am starts (to get the sawmill up and running before 5:00 production) today was my last day at work, I'm tired from lack of sleep, worn out from long hours during the Mill shut.
And I haven't yet seen to sign my new contract, I have bills to pay and all I have is phone call saying "it's in the mail".
We have to buy my wife another car, Found what Lee wanted on the interweb and told her to go have a look at it while I was a work, got home yesterday and asked what she thought of the car, "well, it's O.K."
"what wrong with it?"
"nothing, it's O.K."
"Dear, I'm spending good money on a car that you want, if it's not the car you want tell me and we'll find you a car you do want, I'll spend more, I don't care" (tired here remember).
"I want a Corolla just like my old one, this newer one's seem smaller"
"RIGHT, everyone in the car, we're going for a drive"
Found one on the side of the road the same as her old one, stopped stood beside it and both of us were surprised at how our memories had failed us, these cars were smaller than we had remembered, Phew, I don't have to buy her a 20 yo car to keep her happy, I can get something newer, more reliable while I'm at work for a week at a time and keep her happy. I thought we had done this, something else I didn't need but at least I know what type of car she wants. now all I have to do is buy one.
The new job has a lot of responsibility, some of the tasks are not my strong points, I know this and know I'll have to pull my socks up and get on with it. I know I can do the job well but this still plays on my mind.

I'm tired, having a bourbon and venting. Give me 48 hours and I'll have a different outlook.
I know I'm moaning about how my life is going how I want it to.

Again, thanks all for the help and support.

I know this will all go well, I just have to wait until the 6th of feb, when I'm in my 2nd day of work, then all will be well.

Jeroen

Edit to add, It is kind of funny that my last day of work for the last two firm's I've worked for have been at the same site. the maintenance staff did enjoy a good feed at morning cup of tea time at my expense!
Still have to shout at work though!

I've found over the years it's best to just get on with things. Concerns seem to work themselves out over time if you just keep on keeping on.

Changing jobs is really high on the list of Top Stress Producers. Take some deep breaths and let the stress slide away. (I've actually found that self medication with a sedative makes me worse, not better. When I'm changing jobs I knock off drinking. But that's just me.)

Good news on the car front.

Can you give the new employer a call and tell him the situation? Tell him "in the mail" isn't good enough and you'll come over and pick up the contract. You'll be there in 20 minutes and you're happy to wait in his office until he prints it out. (Can you tell I used to be a sales guy?) That might get you past that item of stress. The technique I've found works is to make a list of the stress items that are making me nuts and start eliminating them one at a time, but you know that. Go sit in that guy's office, you'll feel much better.

On the other hand, if Jeroen appears to be too keen to have the new contract it weakens any bargaining power he might have.
When he mentioned having to give notice before the new contract was agreed, I felt a bit uneasy.

Olaf, That is not the case, I know what I'm going to get paid and I have a start date.
The stress bit is paperwork, I don't have a job at the moment, I want to sign a piece of paper to make it official.
A mate of mine works for this company, I know its all good and they are a good company to work for. I'm just being a head case.

I had a good night's sleep last night and I'm felling much better today.

Sent a e-mail to chase up my contract, all I can do.

The car, well had to take MY car (her old one) to the garage today for tires and stuff, Yea, you'll have it back by eleven thirty.
Didn't get it till two.
Drove to the car yard to basicly buy the car I'd found on the interweb that seemed good, Wife had already had a look at it. and SOLD. half an hour ago! Bugger!
Toyota Corolla’s, hundreds of them on the road but very few good 2nd hand ones for sale.
But we do have this later model one for a bit more for sale over here.....
Car ticked all the boxes for us, was not much over budget (gotta love credit cards!) Wife is happy, car is a good deal.
That is that problem solved and solved well.

Went back to the "workshop" My, well old place of work for 4pm friday beers, whole family in tow (straight from car yard) and had normal friday beers with work mates and both bosses were there, No ill feelings, they know I'm going to a different job, moving on and not just wanting to being away from them. They have said that they will re-employ me if the new job doesn't work out.

Anyway, get home and Lee says to me: "Did I look good driving the new Corolla?" I am so happy that the the ribs I broke a couple of months ago mountain biking have healed! I dam near wet myself, and I needed the laugh.

Yea, sorry Olaf late reply.

Get on with the deferred maintenance around the house and the boat, actually get to take the kids to school and get to know their friends and teachers.
Go mountain-biking on my days off while everyone else is at work or school and not fell guilty that I'm doing my own thing when I should be spending time with family, Cooking dinner at home, because I will not have the excuse not to because I have been at work all day and all that stuff.

Anyway, update, Contract arrived in the mail on Monday and I knew about the medical I would have to do in the STCW course that I will have to do shortly after I started, Contract very clearly said that I had to have to do my Medical and drug and alcohol tests before I start work.
I wanted to see, sign and send my contract so I could go the Christchurch for a few days to spend time with my Mum, Family holiday time, school starts back next week. Managed to get the tests done on Tuesday morning and scanned and sent.
Old company car, Desawdusted and returned along with the cellphone.
I've never studied Latin at school but I'm sure "Corolla" is Latin for "the most boring and reliable get around tool you will ever own". But kind of fun to drive because it's little and dinky die.
So, pile the family into the car on Tuesday PM and off. Done, sorted!
Well that's a big load off, all the stars have come into alignment, all the cards have fallen into place and I start work on Wednesday at 5pm.

Come home from Christchurch, phone rings and I say to lee, that's got to be your Mum.
She gets off the phone and she's sitting on the sofa crying, Her Dad (early 80's) has had a heart attack and is in hospital in intensive care.
Make all the Inlaw jokes you like, I but I had a good cry too.
He will be O.K. just don't know if he will be his former self again.

This is turning into a blog of my life, anyways:

Father in law turns up on the doorstep today, on his way home from hospital, was not due to go home till tomorrow. Tell ya, the bugger is a fighter!
Apparently the ambulance staff put his age at 76, His wife told them he's 81. He pulled his mask off and said "I'm only 80" remember, this is mid heart attack, His 81st birthday is on Friday.

So this afternoon go mountain biking with Page (8), he falls off as per usual, usually he picks him self up and keeps going, today, tears.
What's up bud? Finally I get out of him that he's worried about Dad going away to work for a week.
This is not easy for me, I honestly thought that this change would not worry him much. Bad insight by me.
Talk to him at dinner time and he feels better.

And then, my car, has been using a bit of coolant fluid lately, find the leak today. Top of the radiator has a 4" crack in it.
We've had this car for eight years and it chooses NOW to be a pain in the ass?
So, I can risk it and take the car the 2 hour drive to work, or I take the wife's newer car and leave her with the semi broken car for a week.
I have exactly one working day to solve this problem.
Ricky, my mechanic, who just done the brakes and put new tires on it will help me with that tomorrow.

They will pay me to solve problems, not create them (ie not turn up to work on my first day). I'm good at solving problems.

Bumps on the road.

Great post, I am really impressed with the relationship you have with your son.
Once the cash flow settles, you might want to consider some way to skype or FaceTime home.
My son lives in Denver, and there is a new grandson. It's really like being there, we do it whenever we want.

Great idea, Olaf. Technology is wonderful for that. I worked with two very special doctors, who were "Fellows" (doctors who were completing their training to be Cardiac Interventionalists) who were from overseas and they were training in our Cardiac Cath. Lab for 4 and 5 years. They missed their kids tremendously. They skyped almost every day at least once, and it was what kept them sane. They did have intermittent visits, but they would have family and one on one times on Skype. They saw and spoke to their kids more, than many parents do who live in the same house.

My best friend now lives across the country and she wants me to do Facetime. I promised myself I would set it up by the end of the month. Not sure how to do it yet. Can't be too complicated.

I am envious of many of my friends becoming Grandparents. I am enjoying theirs, vicariously. : )

Hang in there Jeroen. I agree with Olaf. You have a good connection with your son. With a little planning and effort that will grown and strengthen, no matter where you are. If your son sees confidence and a positive approach in you, then he will also feel confident that you two will have quality time together as much as possible.

Years ago at a research facility called PARC we built something very much like a big-screen TV with FaceTime. At first it was a system that you had to "turn on" like making a call, because in those days bandwidth costs were massive. But eventually we had a dedicated line between our Palo Alto and Portland buildings and we could just "leave it on" 7X24. Then, folks started really using it.

The next step was suggested by one of the anthropologist that worked with us, put the big screen in the break-room were folks went for coffee, and in those days a smoke. (shows how old I am) The thing exploded with uses! Folks would be on the phone and say: "Hey, I'll meet you in the break room and we can go over this." They'd hang up the phone and go have a meeting in the break room. Eventually, we had a white board and various other things in the break room to help with this, and the primary purpose of the room became talking on this jury rigged pair of big screens.

Eventually the anthropologists, who were studying collaborative behavour, had learned whatever they wanted to learn about programmers using a tool like this and turned it off. There was a revolt! The programmers re-built the thing and used their own money to pay for the dedicated line for a month until Xerox finally agreed to continue funding just the dedicated line. It was amazing to see what it did for folks, they communicated better than any technical team I'd ever seen up to that point.

It was a great lesson for companies, many of whom still haven't learned it, and for families. I think you'll find that Skype and FaceTime are amazingly popular with the Military because of all the split-up families. I gave our son an iPad so he can use it to communicate with us and his girlfriend while he's in the Marines. He said it's sort of useful for reading, he prefers paper books, but it is "dead killer" (which I think is good) for talking to the girlfriend and occasionally his Dad.

In any event, I think the key is to have it always available and really really cheap, both of which are easy to do now.
