I was considering sailing MAYAN south this weekend, to get going on the work. But, the current forecast is for South winds (of course, only when you want to go south) of 20-25 with gusts to 45. Thunderstorms and hail

HAIL in so. Cal!!

We're not going until they put a stop to this nonsense! I'm going home!

Ha! I was looking into trying to find some kind of quick, cheap getaway before the baby is born, and I looked at temps around the country, and thought, well, what's the point of that????

Leeward side of the Big Island in Hawaii - 83 deg, 10k of wind, water is about 80 deg.... seems perfect.

From a friend who lives there. Likely that there are no Scantlingers in Winnipeg ... but you never know!

Meanwhile, in Washington State ...14 dead and 176 missing in the landslide. My thoughts go out to the survivors--they must be enduring a living hell.

This is so very sad. With all the work so many folks do to make things "safer", then something like this happens and.... damn it!

Yeah, it's really horrific. The rescuers can't get through the mud. They say it's like quicksand. So sad.

Just reading the news and was a bit shocked to read how many are still missing. Very sad, and an awful situation.

Apparently this was a known slide area with several professional reports telling of future major slides.
And there was a significant slide in 2006.

But I have driven that section of highway and also ridden it on my bicycle and no way would I have thought that hill would collapse with a large enough quantity of mud to bridge the river and make it to the highway.

Very sad situation.

I've seen interviews with locals who were unaware of the risk. One said they built their house (gone) only a few years ago and no-one said anything.

Pics reminded me of the Hope slide east of here.

Re: The Weather Lake Superior unleashes an iceberg

Postby cap10ed » Mon Mar 31, 2014 9:03 pm

Canadian and Yugoslavian weather satellites confirm a section of Isle Royale ice shield has calved off and drifted south west to run aground across a small harbour of yachts and local fishing vessels. Capt Rick Beddoe who was on the scene shortly after the berg grounded was asked if the berg would affect his boating season. “ Fuckin A it will ! I might have to sell Sonadora and buy a RV for kerist sakes.”Others declined to comment but the looks on their faces conveyed the disappointment of the harbour now being land locked till September. The Noska J has left Sarnia to help Rick Beddoe remove the iceberg in front of his marina. Noska J has said he will arrive by August to put a line on the iceberg and tow it back out into Lake Superior. AP press by an April Fool

I've been watching the weather offshore, because some of our Santa Cruz boats are coming up the coast from the PV race. Some of the ships off shore were reporting 40k of wind, then 20k, then back to 45k, now 15k. OK, so what's the deal with that?? The NOAA web site has all sorts of caveats about using "Ship Reports" - but having the wind speed jumping around by 20k (from 20 to 40) is pretty wild!!

Does anyone else have any experience with these reports? These folks are right where my guys are and I'm trying to keep an eye on them.

You have any open water up your way Rick? Lake Erie is breaking up but the SW winds are causing some big ridges to form now, ships are getting stuck sticking their noses into the ice after clearing the Welland Canal. Looking like a long time before some of this ice goes away.

Some interesting articles about the start of the shipping season here in duluth - http://duluthshippingnews.com/

It's going to be a rough go this year. As far as sailing goes, I'm pretty sure the month of May is going to be a wash, and we may still be dodging ice bergs on our way to the Apostles for race week in early July

Good GRIEFF!

It is 75deg F here without a cloud in the sky. I know, I'm being a pain. We've seen the first summer weather patterns with strong NW winds stirring it up along the CA coast in the afternoons.

Great article about the MOROW BAY. I can't imagine what the underside of those ice breakers have to go through! Yikes!! This has turned out to be one screwy winter, with only about 25% of the normal water in CA and temps way above average while the eastern half of the US freezes.

Thanks for that article Britches. I will share that with my buddies up here. Nasty to say the least. We had a similar winter in 78 and the ice didn’t melt in Lake Erie till the
1st week of June. And that’s a Lake that warms up when you pee in it.
