I like that even more than the last one - am I correct that it will stand high so people can walk under it?

Yeah, I like this one too. It would be great fun to walk under. If it actually turned, say by the wind somehow, it would be even cooler but I suspect that would be too complex, and noisy as well. Very cool though.

yes, these will be turning. Not sure how yet. Could be a manual crank or possibly a solar-powered electric motor

The upside is that if I get selected, they cut a check for $5k.

However, I need to first be one of 5 finalists. Then the final selection is end of June.

Have them people-powered. Cranks and rides at intervals, exercise and aesthetics.

Great idea Rick- I vote for people powered.

You would love the art of Arthur Ganson- at, believe it or not, the MIT Art Museum-

And for gear lovers, this machine has been running a long time . . . . . . . . .

What if you mounted the gears at different elevations in such a way that one gear would match up with a set of cogs on the axle of a different one? If it was people-powered it would allow the 'users' of the sculpture to experiment and play with what different gear ratios felt like. Also, if you gears had holes in them (perhaps filled with different coloured plexi inserts?), the little circles of light that shone through to the ground beneath would travel in circles--and if you had two gears connected, the circles of light would be rotating at different speeds.

Just a thought--congrats on the first sculpture and good luck with this one!

More development work on the idea...

it will be modular. There will be 4 modules. Each will have a center post and on that post will be a crank which will turn all the gears in that module. 3 or 4 gear sizes will produce spinning at various speeds. For the larger gears, I will be engaging several other artists to make them as artistic as possible. I like the colored plexiglass idea.

I was considering what to use as a shaft for the gears. A qt. sized paint can would work well. But then I realized another piece I had built where I used a lazy susan turntable. That will be ideal and should work well.

Now I'm trying to come up with a way to install the crank. I could use a shaft and some bevel gears. Or maybe some kind of ring gear. Or a bike chain and a bike crank.... open to thoughts on that one.

I'm getting to the point now that even if I don't get selected, I might build it anyway just because I think it will be cool :)

so, my Kickstarter project was not funded. But, not to worry! I was a bit ambitious with the amount. And now that I know what the costs are that I truly need covered, I'll be able to re-start the project and set the goal more realistically.

I truly appreciate ALL the support you folks mustered. It was very humbling, actually.

Stay tuned!

ok guys, I'm taking another swing at this. Live and learn.

Tip for anyone thinking of using Kickstarter: Aim LOW. You can always get more than your target. But clearly, not less! :D

Here's the new project with images of the completed piece:

My new piece wasn't accepted to go on to the 'pitch' round. But that's ok. I think this will be a very cool concept and I will move ahead with it anyway.

In the meantime, my current piece is ALMOST funded! Thanks to you guys and all your support. Get the word out...just $175 short.

Went up to visit Bemidji this weekend. The piece is weathering quite nicely...

YES! Now, get to work on that gear umbrella thing you designed. I think that would be really cool, especially if they all turned and folks could get their umbrellas caught in it.

:)

THANK YOU ALL SO VERY MUCH!

Kickstarter: funded!

Once we get past the holidays, will be sending out rewards to contributors.

Again, from the bottom of my heart, my wife and I say... THANK YOU

We will start work on Cloud Cogs very soon. This is an uncomissioned project but I'm very excited to build it and see how the concept works.
