Hope you get well soon. We're here if you want to complain.

Dont worry, this is above butt level. Those are my lumbar paraspinal muscles, pork chops, back bacon, if you will. The smaller dark, round, masses are the psoas and iliacus muscles, sirloins and tenderloins, but I forget which is which.

My butt is only a little better marbled, these days.

It's all about the pissing and moaning, Bro. Thanks.

Moe, after I wrote that I was driving to Adele's school for a meeting when I thought, "'pissing and moaning' would be better than 'complaining.'" I was in the car so couldn't edit.

Either way we're here. I especially hope you can make Bermuda with Rob and Sparky.

Careful there Eric. You are using some pretty big wordss. You might have to take this to the "paw" thread. Or before long it's goimg to be like an episode of Dr. Kildare around here. The original. I'll be Raymond Massey.
It's fun being old. Sometimes.

I might have shingles. I really don't give a rat's ass. My wife's best friend came over to swim today. She's a Med-X and I described this odd feeling I have had in my side for two weeks. Kind of like a skin hyper sensitivity. I figured lung cancer, liver cancer or severe liver damage ( how the hell would I get that?). She said my liver is on the other side. I knew that. This pain started about two weeks after my shingles shot. What's with these fucking shots? First my flu shot makes me sick now I have a reaction to the shing-fucking-gles. shot. Maybe not. Lower rib cancer? TB?

I'll go for a swim. That's what I'll do. I'll frolic in the pool.

Sorry. I tried to be clear, but I'm on some heavy medication here, Pops. I'm sorry to hear about the skin thing. Doesn't sound like shingles, but it could always be the cedar shakes. It's easy to put a little hurt on a skin nerve and get that sort of feeling. It has happened to me.

Oh great, your pool will be full of shingles now. Better fill it with pure chlorine and flame treat it.

If you had shingles you would give a rat's ass. It's one of the most unpleasant things I have had to live through. I hope for your sake you don't break out.

This, gentlemen, is my late mother, who was born on this day in 1925. I will be raising a glass to her this evening.

She was actually quite proper about things like nice glasses by the time I got to know her, so that's good.

Oh man. This is one I can relate to.

For me, the beginning of it all was a summer digging drainage ditches around the property, and filling them with 14 tons of 3/4 inch drain rock. One shovel full was not bad, and 14 tons worth one shovel at a time was not bad, but the action of having to jab the shovel into the existing pile of gravel with sufficient force to overcome the resistance that comes with a pile of gravel that big ... bulging disc L4/L5 putting pressure on the sciatic nerve ... OUCH.

I didn't know pain like that existed. Actually called 911 on myself and had two shots of morphine in my ass to ease me back. Luckily we have cork floors and I could drag myself (literally) to the bathroom. Slept (sort of) on the living room floor. 6 oxycontin a day--and an appreciation of what chronic pain can do to you, and the dark thoughts that start to materialize. I was good for 2 hours, and then stared at the clock for two until I could take the next one. Wow.

But, with perseverance, dedication to a physio routine, building up core muscle strength, and lifestyle changes (lose weight) things got better and I was able to return to the realm of education. Without being legally stoned.

The problem still persists, but I have learned to listen to my back, and if I start feeling things in my left knee, it is time for some stretches and sleeping with a pillow under the knees. So far, that does the trick.

One thing that was very helpful was classes with a friend who is a teacher of the 'Alexander' technique:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_technique

I had no idea how many bad habits I had--simple things like how to sit in a chair without putting undue pressure on one's back and that sort of thing. Fascinating what we don't notice.

Take care. It will take time, but there are incremental improvements along the way that one can celebrate.

Cheers

Thank you, Ross. The pain is amazing isn't it? The next weeks will certainly be an ordeal for me. I am already thin and fit and and got religion about core strength years ago  so I'm going to need something strong. I have a referral to PT at Walter Reed and then I'm thinking maybe yoga, so my wife is trying to find me an all male class.

If I fail, there's always tools. I talk to the man who rebuilt my neck, tomorrow.

All male class? Is that really necessary? Bob, are there girls in your Tai Chi class?

KD, calling KD. Are you paying attention? This thread has now moved on to posting visual imagesto lift Moe's spirits. Flowers, of course, are a thoughtful choice (well done CL!), but you have a special, um, er, "flair" for this sort of thing. If you follow my drift... Ish, you can play too since you have demonstrated skills in this dept too.. C'mon now, Eric's in pain. I'm, or I mean, he's, counting on you.....

I was looking for pictures of a religious beacon and came up with this:

I must have spelled beacon wrong.

I suspect that's not going to give Eric any joy, so here's something more appropriate for a man of his intellectual leanings.

Yes, even here at Scantlings I often have to stop and try to explain to SWMBO why I participate in these sailing forums: "really honey, they are classy guys, really."

I am very careful when I visit here at work.

Why, thank you, Kim.

My wife is pretty understanding and has really liked all the people from this world whom she's met in real life. She also really appreciates you guys amusing me, listening to me piss and moan, and letting her get her work done.

Visiting here and the other place from work is always dicey, for sure.

Definite improvement this a.m. For the breathlessly interested: walked 4 houses down the block, talked to a pretty neighbor who told me I sure didn't look 56.

Wish I were more sure of the sign of the error.

Walking is good. 4 houses today, 5 tomorrow. I have done battle for 30 years with my L-5 ( No, not the Gibson L-5) and I know what back pain can feel like. Right now it's behaving itself.
I wish you the best in your own battle.
