I don't have any amps right now.

actually, that's not true. I have a Peavy head with two 12" speakers, but the head is not working currently.

But I'm not allowed to play so people can hear it. Just headphones for now. When I do get to play with a real amp, it blows my mind!

Someplace 'round here I have a Fender Princeton. I bought it 30 years ago to have something that I could overload at relatively low volumes and it has done that job really well for years. It sounds exactly like what it is - the sort of amp a high school kid would use in his garage. I gota find that thing and play with it.... glad I remembered it.... I'm forgetting too many things these days.

Rick:
I have five working amps not counting the ones I gave to Max like my new Vox. I never plug in. I'd play the bass in but it's not like I sit here playing the bass by myself. That's not very mch fun. So if I chose to play I grab my Martin and I just sit and play. When WHL is here he grabs my old Guild. They have bonded.
So I sit ther while WHL goes on about, "Just listen to that. No, listen to that. Can you hear that?" This goes on for 20 minutes then we do a few tunes.

I have my Johnny Burnette Pandora sation on now. All rockabilly all the time. It makes me happy.
"Drinkin' wine spo-dee-O-dee".
I'm a man of sophisticated tastes.

Beau:
Tell me how you lose a guitar amplifier? Your house must be too big. Or maybe your house is organized like my garage.

Bob, what is your Pandora setup?

Just got back from Adele's viola debut at her school in the form of her first "cookie concert." Her intonation was flawless. As was her bow to the audience. Suzuki would have been proud.

That's my girl.

Keith:
Congrats to Adele on her viola performance.

Viola joke:
Do you know how to tell when the viola's are out of tune?
Their bows are moving.

Max gave me some speakers and a mini bass box for my computer two Christmases ago. He just plugged it all in and said, "Now you have Pandora." I got about 36 free hours before I had to subscribe. But now I have just resubscribed. There are times I like to chose one of my channels and just go with the flow. I favor my classical opera channel along with my Eddy Cochran channel and my Dion and the Belmonts channel. I also have a Bill Evans channel for when I am in my heroin junky mood. Given the fact that I have very good tube gear in the office and some nice floor standing speakers I am amazed at the sound the computer system can produce. Then that little voice says, "It's about the music Bob."

Bob, I would like to help you with that setup. You have kickass hifi sound and your computer sound should be routed to it. There are many ways to do this. You know about all the expensive USB based DACs, digital to analog converters. But the headphone DAC in your computer is just fine. Start with one of these

Image

The little end into the headphone jack on your computer and the other an RCA cable to an input on your hifi preamp. Computer sound on your awesome hifi. You could go the expensive DAC route but your fidelity is probably limited by Pandora.

If you have a wireless computer network in your house you can go that route using an Apple Airport Express. I do that, which enables me to ship anything in iTunes on any computer to my hifi gear.

Please believe me when I say I'm not a gadget guy. I don't even have a smartphone. But this shit's important.

Congrats, Keith. How sweet. Viola's not an easy instrument and it attracts some unusual folks.

This guy http://harvardmagazine.com/2009/05/life-in-counterpoint happens to be the Army Surgeon General's consultant on chem casualty care and was a few years ahead of me in the neurology program at the old BCH. He taught me everything I know about the counterterrorism business and various other aspects of military staff life. He's apparently quite a talent as a violist and composer and will use his VA Ed benefits to attend conservatory when he retires. He's a wacko through and through.

So..... All this talk about basses motivated me to stop by Sylvan Music today, a good local guitar store. They have an acoustic bass from up in the PNW called a Larrivee B03-RE I liked playing it. The neck seems long, but the thing has a nice upright base sound through its integral pickup. The upper registers are really easy to play and the big body, about the size of a Martin Dreadnought, has a lot of natural sound. It's easy to play with no amp at all if you have strong hands.

Do any of you have an option on this maker? Any good?

Bob, when Stacey and I combined households a lot of stuff went into storage, including amps, stereos, TVs, etc..... I should sort it out and give a lot of it away. It's on my 'tuit list.

Guild?? GUILD?? Did Bob mention his Guild 6 string acoustic ?
SHEESH...that is torture.

That Guild is like Pavarotti compared to other tenors. Great action, perfect intonation... Considering it's not a hugely expensive guitar like those in Bluedog Guitars in North Vancouver, it sounds and plays better than any they have in their store.

I found a diamond in the rough in Maui two years ago. (The one in my avatar). It's the el cheapo Takamine Dreadnaught branded as a Jasmine. The Takamine is the guitar the Eagles used on their last tour. I wanted a cheap guitar for boat deliveries that played well. This is just shy of the Guild in all round tone, action and intonation. The only thing I did was drop the saddle a smidgeon and filed the edges of the frets. It came with a Fishman Piezo pickup, gig bag and extra strings for under $300 and plays like something ten times that.

The only problem with playing Bob's city girl Guild, is that I feel I am cheating on my village lassie Jasmine !!!

Even in the age of mass produced, Cnc cut guitars, there are some unique stand outs.

Beau:
Larivee is a very good guitar maker. VERY GOOD. I bought one, dreadnaught style 6 string, for Max about ten years ago. Not cheap but great quality. The company started in Vancouver BC but moved to California.
I've never seen a Larivee bass but I'd bet it's a good axe. I say you buy it, get tired of it and give it to me.

Keith:
What excatly do you call that connection? It should be available online.
Is the headphone jack on my computer the little red input on the front?
Will all my computer noises come through the hi-fi when that is plugged in?
I'm going to need about 25' of connecting cables. Will that be a problem. I'm sure I can get them made to that length.

Bob, google "stereo mini-jack to rca" and the internet world will be your oyster.

I think 25' wired is better than wireless if you can route the copper. With long coax runs people worry about capacitive load and so a loss of high end frequencies. We'll have to ask DT about this.

I'll eat my hat and buy you a bottle of scotch if you're not happy being able to route your computer sound to your hifi.

Edit: the little stereo mini end goes to wherever your headphone jack is on your computer. They all have them. My microphone input on the one where I'm typing is red. The headphone jack is next to it and black.

Edit again: Just listened to Tal and Beck "ended as lovers" or whatever on wireless. Sounded good. If you want to go that route it requires an Apple Airport Express and some $25 software.

Beau, I looked for a picture of the bass you described.

I like the idea of just being able to pick it up and play it.

Your shit in storage just came to mind. Purge, man. Send anything good to me.

I'm going to Ann's riding association's appreciation dinner tonight. I'm thinking chicken or pasta but both of my girls are being recognized for members' accomplishments this year. Adele said there is only one other girl she was competing with and as such was minimizing her accomplishment. I suppose she has a point but that won't stop me from being proud of my girls.

Keith,

That's the right bass. The individual I was looking at has a sitka spruce top and rosewood sides and back. It looks beautifully made, like a fine normal guitar. I played it for about 20 minutes without an amp, and that would work in a living room jamming with another person or two. But if someone is really strumming a big guitar hard this base simply isn't loud enough. Then I'd need a little amp like that Princeton I've got in the storage locker someplace. I played this bass for a while through a nice small bass amp with a pair of 12" speakers and a 4" tweeter - it sounded quite nice. The upper registers are resonant enough that you can play lead guitar riffs on it and they sound reasonable. What is very odd, and takes some getting used to, is that there is so much feed back potential that you can play this thing like it's a bowed stringed instrument. Hammering on the notes is enough to get everything flowing and feeding back nicely and then you can just play on indefinitely. I ended up using my right hand to mute the strings that I didn't want to feedback and could choose to play cords trivially by hammering them on with my left. Fun to do on a base. The strings on it are round-wound and that leads to a lot of squeaking as you slide up and down the neck, I'd probably give up a little brightness (this bass has plenty of it on its own) and go with flat-wound strings.

Bob,

Thanks for the info on the builder - this bass certainly looked well built and sounded quite nice.

Guys,

My storage lockers are like those that they auction off on TV - you never know if you're going to find something "nice" or "valuable" or just a heap of old regatta t-shirts that were never washed after wearing 'em. Also, the Admiral said: "You're not getting out of cleaning out those lockers by sticking your friends with all that rubbish." She's usually right about this stuff, you guys should listen to her.

I'm thinking I should wander back over and play that thing some more... maybe pick up a proper small bass amp as the valiant little Princeton is really too small.... good project for this afternoon.

I have a Fender bass amp BXR 25 for small gigs.
http://support.fender.com/manuals/bass_amplifiers/BXR_25_manual.pdf

Easy to carry, two inputs (high and low for active pickups), tape in, preamp out, pwr amp in. 10" speaker. It will also permit two instruments plugged in simultaneously. It's a neat amp and if you want more cowbell, just take the preamp out to the main PA or other amp.

The nearest current model in terms of features is the Rambler 75

My practice / living room jam amp is the SWR Workingman's 10:
Image

They no longer make this exact model. I've been quite pleased with it. I've played alongside loud guitarists and full drum kit (in a living room) and this amp held it's own.

It sure is easier to transport than by big Fender Superbassman (4 x 6L6 tubes) and massive custom 4x15 cabinet! I don't have that any more. I moved out of town, and my guitarist was keeping it for me. He claims he had to sell it to make bail, but I'm pretty sure it went up his nose. That was one of many reasons that I decided a career as a rock star wasn't my best bet.

This from the friend that Anom calls Jim on buying a new bass:

"My advice, since I know nothing about guitar electronics, (or anything else that actually requires reading and understanding technical specs) is to stick with that big hunk of Fender lumber. It sounded great. Just play it hard! The Steinberger is too Geddy-Brainy-Nerdy 80's. You've already got that covered..."

I think I'll buy it just to spite him.

Sometimes a guitar just speaks to you right away.

CNC guitar manufacturing means that the cheap guitars of today are not as bad as the cheap guitars of years ago. Maybe look at a Mexican built Fender, their low line. I use the SWEETWATER catalog. They are very good. If you don't like the axe you can send it back. Still can't imagine buying a guitar from a catalog. Where's the fun in that? I have an old Peavy bass I never play anymore. I'll check it out and if it still plays OK I could ship it to you. I did lend it to a friend who kept it for years. Not sure if it's up to snuff anymore. I'll let you know.
