To all Canadians and especially to my friends here, I offer my sympathy and support following the sad shooting of yesterday.

+1. That editorial "cartoon" was absolutely inspired.

I learned something trivial from this incident - I always thought the Parliamentary Sergeant at Arms was only a ceremonial post and the huge mace his only "weapon". Until now I had no idea that he was actually a high ranking Mountie and carried a firearm.

Canadians are shocked by this senseless act and collectively grieve for the soldiers family. I have received some heart felt messages from my multihull comrades and now the Scantlers step up to the plate. The good will passed along by friends south of the border makes me feel better and invigorates the thought that the greater good will defeat the greater evil.

I stopped posting on SA, and rarely go there nowadays. It was in part, because of a reply via PM, that I got from Scot T a while back, that was very anti-Canadian.
I realize now, that Scot is battling to stay sober, but his anger and dislike of Canada, was unsettling. The anti-Canadian sentiment was not his alone, so I have been avoiding the place of late. I have met some wonderful American friends via SA, so I'm well aware that this sentiment, is not held universally. : )

I watched this clip, this morning. It made me laugh. Good on Stephen Colbert. He pulled this off, in his own unique, funny and obviously well intended way.

I love Canada.
Especially Western Canada.
Don't ever forget what some Canadians did for some Americans in Iran at great risk to themselves.
Best friends we have on earth.

We're not just friends Kim - we're family. The engraving on the Peace Arch at Blaine describes it best I think - "Children of a common mother".

Lin, ever since we got the internet started one of its worst side effects is to allow trolls and haters to appear to be larger than they are. Then there is a special place in hell for folks like Scott who make money by encouraging the worst in people.

I have to say that I haven't missed SA at all, even as perverse entertainment. Life is too short.

As my son said to me once: "When you're arguing with an idiot on the internet, there are two idiots arguing."

I wear my lovely Canada rugby shirt with pride. The haters can go to hell.

Thanks for all of the positive thoughts and messages--really appreciated, especially from those south of the border.

In the day or two after the murder of Warrant Officer Vincent in Quebec, we received an order from our CO that we were NOT to arrive or leave the armoury (or in our case, rehearsal room at HQ) in uniform but were to change when we got there. This certainly raised my eyebrows, as in 'what the hell else is going on?' ...

And then, the murder of Corporal Carillo. Where does one begin?

The day after, I found myself in Quebec City, and took a tour of the Citadel. It is still an active military base and the ceremonial home of the Royal 22nd Regiment. Other than what looked like a couple of extra guys in green and an MP at the entrance, they were open for tours as usual. This was comforting--and the tour was fascinating.

For those who have not been to Ottawa and visited the War Memorial, here is a shot--hopefully it gives you a sense of just how powerful the cartoon is, and why.

Been there and you are quite correct. Very powerful, as was the cartoon (seems a trite noun for such a meaningful drawing). We are forever friends and allies even if we make it hard on you sometimes.
