Violet is now walking!

Oh man, I just loooooves me a baby!

I used to think I wanted to work in daycare when I retired because I missed having a tiny one, myself. Now that my own baby is finishing undergrad, I can run my own govt-funded daycare center for post-bacs. You're not allowed to say they're cute and they're too big to pick up, but I love them too.

OK, so it's not major-serious back pain, but..... I'm on a cross-country flight during the effing SuperBowl. Sign up for the ridiculously expensive in-flight wi-fi only to find that I can't find any subscription streaming services that work with this particular wi-fi offering. So..... I know, I'll turn to Scantings for amusement. Oh, wait, KD may be posting in..... talk about the potential for NSFW embarrassment. Oh well, I got upgraded to first class so at least the booze is free. Maybe I'll just get a buzz on and go over to CA to see if there is a pissing contest going on....

Edit: Oops, thought I was in the MoRestesEricIsFucked thread. Guess I've already been into the free booze. Burp.... Carry on.

Rick:
I checked out the Peavy bass. It plays fine. It could use a neck adjustment and any music store can do that for you. It should have new strings. Every guitar needs new strings.
But It actually sounds quite good. Darn good. I was surprised. I liked it.

I'll check with UPS tomorrow and see what shipping will cost to Minn or Wisc. I forget where you are. Fargo?
This will be a long term loan. My wife gave me this bass 35 years ago for a Valentine's gift. You can use it but there may come a time when I want it back. Can't imagine that happening but you never know.
The only stipulation is that I want it well cared for. That requires very little effort. Climate stable environment and a bit of playing now and then should do it.

With that bass gone I'll have a slot open for Eric's Gibson.

Eric, If you really want to loose the C1, I'd love to talk to you 'bout it. I have shit in storage... Could trade or whatever. But, I think to might want to keep that.

Bob, great news that the lovely Violet is walking. Now defense will be much harder to play man-on-child - you may have to gotto a zone.

Most of the hoard isn't worth the price of shipping. What sorts of things would you want? We kinda should move this to a pm or a phone call maybe?

Eric,

As a person with back problems, kindly avoid bartering for a Les Paul. Those suckers are heavy and can only make your back problems worse.

From Wikipedia about Randy Bachman (Guess Who, BTO):

Bachman had a successful operation on his shoulder in November 2007 to repair a torn rotator cuff, which he has blamed on his decades-long use of heavy, vintage guitars.

Sometimes I sit and think. Other times I just sit.

They talk about my drinking, but never my thirst.

Rob:
I have noticed that some of the vintage guitar magazines sell Les Pauls by their weight. They list the weight of each guitar. I presume the heavier guitar would theoretically have the better sound, longer sustain?
I have never owned a Les Paul. They always feel a bit heavy and out of balance when I play them. I do like the necks though.

Bob, if you send me dimensions/weight, I will send you a UPS label. And if there's any costs for packaging it, I'll cover those. I will take great care of it and if you or anyone ever needs it, I'll be happy to send. After I get good at being a bass slinger, I'll send it back.

Amazingly generous of you, Bob.

Rick:
"Generous"? Me? I am doing this for selfish reasons. It will make me feel good.

I'm pretty certain that with your skills with tools tou can adjust the neck yourself. Even I can do it. I'm sure there are Google site that can guide you. It's just a matter of being very patient and going slowly. The tough part for you will be knowing what you are after in terms of the finished product. I look for good action and intonation all the way up the neck. It's not bad now but I'm one of those bass players who likes to adventure above the 8th fret frequently and I like a silky action so I can string together my arpegios. That's what I call them "arpegios". Amati/Paul probably thinks of them more like, "What the hell is Bob doing up there and how the hell is he going to get back?" Truth is, I don't always know. But I'm always a fret away from the right note.

OK, I'll measure the case today and weigh it. I'll still stop by my UPS store and give them those dims and the weight and see what they say.

Rick:
The bass is a white, Peavy dual pickup "FOUNDATION" model.

Overall max dims of the case are:
52" long
18" wide ( it tapers)
5" thick

Weight is 20 pounds

Given the difference in our respective climates I think I'd give the bass at least two weeks to aclimate before fiddling with the neck. You never know. Maybe it will self adjust. It's very playable now.

Re: Gee-tar

Postby BeauV » Mon Feb 04, 2013 5:10 pm

OK, so I go to the storage locker over the weekend, where I remember the Princeton amp being stored, and way up on the top shelf there is a Fender amp top just visible. "YA HOO!" I proudly proclaim to no one in particular for having remembered which town the damn thing was in and approximately where - I haven't seen this thing in about 10 years. I don't have a ladder. "No Problem" I think to myself. "It's not that heavy and the shelves are strong. I'll just climb up and carry it down."

OK, I get up there and I'm starting to pull the thing out and it is WAY BIGGER than I remember, but I'm looking at the back of it, and I'm thinking: "F**k, this thing is HEAVY." I now have it all the way out and find myself hanging from the shelf while the dust cob-webs and various unmentionable things that mice leave around are slowly falling all over me. "Damn, this thing sure seems bigger than a Princeton." my now somewhat worried self says.... "OK, idiot, what are you going to do now? You are 6 feet above the floor hanging from one hand and this thing is too heavy to let you single hand climb down!"

"Ah ha!" my more optimistic self says, "The old Barko Lounger chair is over there in the corner with some papers piled on it. I can gently lob this amp over there and it'll land nice and soft." I swing it a little and with a perfect underhanded pitch land it precisely on the papers on the barko lounger and everything works out perfectly. No broken tubes. I climb down and go have a better look and "WHAT THE F**K" I say to myself, "This isn't a Princeton. It's a MUSICMASTER BASS amp, still a Fender, but what the F**K is a MUSICMASTER???" Then I notice a postit on the front of the thing. "Dad" it says, "I borrowed the Princeton to take it to a regatta party at the club and we got to jamming on board Seth's boat, and as we were climbing off the boat we sort of dropped the Princeton into the Bay." WHAT THE F******!!! "I felt really bad about it, but I know you used the amp for the Bass so I found this really cool real Bass Amp on Craigslist and it works great." the note continued. "I know you haven't used the Princeton in years, so you probably won't even find this replacement amp. I'll probably end up with it in my garage in about twenty years after you kick the can and cross the bar. All my love."

OK..... I had to laugh.... he was right. If I hadn't been talking to youse guise I'da never uv climbed up there and my son would have been right, he'd have hauled the thing to the dump - or dropped it in the bay - after I crossed the bar. So, I plugged it in and it works. It's actually a better bass amp than the Princeton was, but.... now I don't have a bass....

Life seems to be like this a lot.....

Fack!
I want that amp and I want it now!

Beau try considering the oboe. It's portable. No amp needed.
And just think how cool you'll look with your lips all puckered up.
You will have those SF rump rangers lined up outside your stage door.

If you send the amp to me you won't need no steekin' bass.

Beau, that is a great story. My first bass was a Musicmaster bass, and that was the companion amp, which I didn't have. I sold the bass for $80 in 1977 or so when I got my P-bass. If you like to masterbass, it's an especially good setup. You seem to have the junk, which is a good start.

Bob,

Having successfully dragged the amp back to the house I decided to give it a shot with my old beat up Ovation 6-string. It's probably a better base amp, cuz it ain't no Fender Twin. That said, if keep the treble pretty low it has a great Garage Band rhythm gee-tar sound. Perfect for something like "Heard It Through The Grape Vine".

I ain't going to blow no oboe - no way. I see spots when I blow on things like that. I tried the alto sax - saw spots. Sold the sax.

The Admiral is out of town for a few days, so I have the Gee-tar and the Amp right in the middle of the living room with a couple of empties on top of the amp - just like old times. Romo the dog went downstairs where it was quieter - he's got no taste in good music, geeesh!

SHEESH...that is torture.

That Guild is like Pavarotti compared to other tenors. Great action, perfect intonation... Considering it's not a hugely expensive guitar like those in Bluedog Guitars in North Vancouver, it sounds and plays better than any they have in their store.

I found a diamond in the rough in Maui two years ago. (The one in my avatar). It's the el cheapo Takamine Dreadnaught branded as a Jasmine. The Takamine is the guitar the Eagles used on their last tour. I wanted a cheap guitar for boat deliveries that played well. This is just shy of the Guild in all round tone, action and intonation. The only thing I did was drop the saddle a smidgeon and filed the edges of the frets. It came with a Fishman Piezo pickup, gig bag and extra strings for under $300 and plays like something ten times that.

The only problem with playing Bob's city girl Guild, is that I feel I am cheating on my village lassie Jasmine !!!
